yourpc48 Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 Found a grinder at a garage sale for $15 and then purchased some buffing wheels for about $30 and finally some huge sticks of compound for $20 (black emory and Green finishing) I started polishing my stainless and wow! what a difference between before and after. I have polished lots of stuff in the past and I got some tips from a serious polishing guy (Carl Jacobson of The Shine Shop Lakeside Oregon) years ago. Check out the before and after shots of the grill parts I had a chance to do. Heres the small grill trim. And the left and right lower grill stainless. I also have done the marker light trim but no pics yet. My plan for this P15 is to make it satin black with polished stainless bling. Quote
plymouthasc Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 Wow! What a difference some polishing makes! Quote
RobertKB Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 The trim looks marvellous! Great job! However, I think it would look better and stand out even more against gloss black rather than a satin black. Just my opinion but satin black is a fad whereas gloss black is classy. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 Great job! Makes me want to do mine! Tom Quote
John Mulders Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 Looks great, do you intend to put some protection (wax) over it? I found that the pitted parts I polished had returning rust buildup. Then I first cleaned them (with a Stainless steel compound) and applied wax , seemed to stop the rust coming back quickly. John Quote
yourpc48 Posted July 2, 2011 Author Report Posted July 2, 2011 (edited) If you polish parts with a stick compound it essentially seals the metal to a certain extent. There should be no reason to wax the stainless with anything. As far as the chrome parts, I will be doing something with those, I just havent decided what to do yet. They are all pitted but I like the glass lenses and bulbs. I dont think I want to go over to the LED lights that come with new chrome. With the cost of plating these days, It might almost be worth buying the led models and modifying the bezels to work with the original lights. Hmmm Theres a thought for the tail lights....
