Russellc Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 Guys doing body work on my 46 plym. What is the best way to fill pitting in the metal? There are spots on the body that have been exposed for a long time, but are not rusted through, just deeply pitted. Thanks for any help, Russ. Quote
Scruffy49 Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 Treat the rust. Self-etching primer. High build primer. Sand off the "dust" layer, a red scotch brite pad is perfect. Any dark spots are pits. Skim coat with glazing putty, sand smooth. Another layer of high build primer should now level everything out. Quote
Dave72dt Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 (edited) Remove whatever rust you can before putting any treatment chemicals on it. Sanding, wire brushes, coarse fiber discs will remove the coarse rust. I've used all three on the same area of pits and each removed rust the others didn't. Following up with a small spot media blaster will get some more oujt of the pits. At that point, use the chemical treatments. Etching primer next will work followed by the high buiild. I use 2k primer for everything and normally don't use etching. Just a personal preference Mask your seam lines on the lines before applying any filler material. After applying filler and before it sets, remove the tape. It'll leave you with a clean open seam that you don't have to dig filler out of later. Edited May 12, 2011 by Dave72dt Quote
