thrashingcows Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Well the Saga continues. I haven't had a lot of time to work on things, been doing home reno's. But I did manage to get the wheel cylinders rebuilt on the front of the car. Here are some before pics... Couldn't figure out how to get the pistons out of the bores. I soaked them for a couple days in PB Blaster and they moved "in" but wouldn't pop out. Then I had a thought...compressed air! That did the trick.... Quote
thrashingcows Posted March 13, 2011 Author Report Posted March 13, 2011 I didn't initially realize that the pistons were a two piece unit. Once I discovered that it took a little bit of work to get them all apart. I used a 600 grit wet sand paper to clean the corrosion off, then heated them with the propane torch...and a couple pliers to hold them and twisted them apart. All apart and ready for a good cleaning. Quote
thrashingcows Posted March 13, 2011 Author Report Posted March 13, 2011 So I cleaned all the parts on my wire wheel, then honed out the cylinders. They all cleaned up nicely. Cleaned and painted, ready for assembly.... 10 minutes later I had these.... Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Wow, those look like new parts. Let us know how they work out. I like jobs like that where you don't have to crawl around on the ground and twist yourself up like a contortionist. You can actually sit down and do the work. Very civilized. Quote
Robert Horne Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 I rebuild the wheel cylinders on my 48 last year. I used an old master cylinder with a short line hooked to each cylinder to force the cups out. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 One heck of a job!! Looks like new!! Cool!! Tom Quote
TJM70's_48 Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Thanks for posting; I need to do a lot of brake work this year and it's so helpful to see parts and progress. I'm a little intimidated as I've not had the drums off yet - only owned the car for 2 years. Quote
captden29 Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 thrash, nice work. should stop the car fine. i replaced all my wheel cylinders and master but the wheel cylinders keep rusting. i think they are made from poor chinese recycled metal. i need to find a source for american made cylinders. the napa and raybestos are only assembled here, not made here. does anyone know of a source for made in america cylinders? capt den Quote
John Mulders Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 look good, always good to see progress like that! John Quote
thrashingcows Posted March 13, 2011 Author Report Posted March 13, 2011 Thanks for the kind comments...appreciate it! Will continue to update with pics and info as I move along. To Captden29...if you want USA made, find a set of decent originals, or not so decent, and either hone them out, or have them re-sleeved. Mine did not look pretty when I initially pulled them apart, and I wondered if they would clean up with the hone....I was pleasantly surprised how nice they all cleaned up. Quote
