55 Fargo Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 (edited) Today, after 1:00PM, decided to install weatherstrip on passenger door of my Coupe. I had ordered new door rubber from Roberts, I cleaned the door edges, removed all the old rubber, and spent 2 hours prepping the door, then installed the rubber using 3M weatherstrip adhesive, it worked out pretty good. The door was a tighter close, right off the bat, but the rubber is relaxing a bit already, it looks good, and the seal seems very good too. Tomorrow will do other door, and if weather holds up, will test drive the car and check for drafts and noise etc. I learned 1 lesson, the doors should have been removed, while I was painting the car, and the rubber should have been removed at that time too, the paint and metal were in decent shape, except on the bottom side of the door, a little rougher. I plan to paint the car again in the future, this rubber will replaced then, and the job done more professional. Here are the pics, of the rubber on the door...... 1950 Special Deluxe Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Did you buy the universal fit, T28K? I have that kit in my garage waiting to be put on. Bought the gas pedal grommet as well as a set of firewall grommets. Bought new trunk weatherstrip and hood seal too. New floor mats as well. I had them shipped to a UPS Store in Montana and then picked it up this summer while on holidays, saved a bunch on shipping and duty. I hope you don't mind me "looking" over your shoulder. Finally got the gas installer to come and finish the heater install in my garage then I got swamped at work. Snow is here, so I now have all winter. Quote

55 Fargo Posted November 12, 2010 Author Report Posted November 12, 2010 I'll betcha the fun part was between the hinges. Good job!Tom Tommy, the weathertrip does not go around the hinges on a Chrysler, there is a weatherstrip along this area that is seperate. It was not overly hard to install, the door is much tighter to close right now, and hopefully this will loosen up some, as the rubber finds it's comfort fit....Fred Quote

I bought the 2 door rubber, it is specific to 2 door cars I think, as the rubber isa slightly different shape......Fred ps no snow here, but ver cool damp rain and sleet today, clearing now, and cooler Quote

steveplym Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Looking good Fred. Glad it worked out for you. I had my doors off when I repainted my car. Found out it was easier to put the rubber on with the doors on the car than off. Basically because in fitting up the doors I ended up messing up the weatherstrip on the doors. It was much easier to install and fit without the weatherstripping. Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 13, 2010 Author Report Posted November 13, 2010 Today installed the driver side, it went on fine, but the door could barely close, I re-adjusted latch, and had to adjust the hinges, , and trim a bit of weatherstrip, in some spots. This really sucks, I have always had trouble with this door, the door was smucked at one point. Will the weatherstrip relax over time, the door is closed now, but is quite tight on the latch, the spacing is okay, but it is out a bit along the B latch pillar. Any Ideas,please.........Fred 1 Quote

Rodney Bullock Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 Rockwood, someone should have told you not to adjust your door. You just install your weather stripping close the doors making sure they are in the right place. Tomorrow open them They are going to compress. You want that snug fit. That keeps the water and sound out. You have it rolling around the contour nice. That's what you want. How is your window channel, are you going to or have you replaced that? Quote

Rodney, I have the door sitting nice and firm against the weather strip now, but this door was problematic, from the beginning of my time with the car, and it was probably smucked way back when. I would not have been able to close the door without adjusting the striker plate, at the very least, it seems to be settling in now, it is making a good seal, and I drove the car, it is much quieter. If I have too, will do the job over again on this door, but it seems to be not bad, will see if the rubber compresses a bit in time. Does the rubber settle in and compress after a while? Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 Yes, It does take time. If the door was problematic that's different, it must fit and close correct before. The weather stripping after a while creates a wear pattern. I know it's nice and quite now. The real test is when the wind is present. As you are driving when you have everything right no cold air finds it's way in. This is why I like driving my Plymouth in the winter, with your little heater working and the condition right these cars ae very comfortable. Hae you done your window channel yet? Quote
bobostski Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 Does the new rubber come with the metal for the bottom? I found some universal type at a local hardware store for about $1 a foot. Looks good but door is tight. I live in Dallas and thought the heat word compress the rubber but after a year I have to still slam the door to close. It also stuck to the top inside of the door and ripped off some of the outer rubber. Quote
