RobertKB Posted October 24, 2010 Author Report Posted October 24, 2010 How many hours did it take to get the whole car down to bare metal? What did you use to do the work? As mentioned previously, the only thing I did to the car was strip the bright work, lights, etc. I had all the stripping, prep, and paint done by someone else. Sorry I can't help but there are lots of people on the forum who have done their own work and should be able to help you. Rockwood and Tim Adams are two that come to mind. Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 Paint stripping to bare metal can entail, sand(media) blasting, sanding witha DA sander, and 80-120 grit paper, chemical strippers, using a razor blade to delaminate the paint, etc. I liked sand blasting, followed by a phosphoric acid treatment, followed by rusty metal primer, as a base primer. The recipe and procedures, I was coached/mentored by Tim Adams, he has used a similar approach with much success, on a number of cars. Tim also has employed a metal shrinking disc approach, to straighten and level up, flawed substrates. I know other guys who use a DA sander, and go at it that way too, getting all primer, paint fillers off the meal, and then either acid treat, and primer, with etching primer or 2 k epoxy primers. Stripping down the car is time consuming, but if a Guy has a decent sized sand blaster, it can be made short work of it in fast time.........Fred Quote
