You Guys, would no doubt run me and my old nag out of town, or shoot her and hang me from the nearest tree....LOL

My paint job and body prep cost me about $300.00, I did it all, and it is very rough, and I have to remind myslef of this fact, when she don't look so grand in certain light angles of the day.

My interior to date, and I still need a headliner and carpet sewn and installed has run me about $850, for the seats, door panels, kick panels, dash paint, and window trim paint.

Mine is a very low budget, poor mans job, and looks the part, this is no show car, but she is all I got.........Fred

Fred - I think you've done a good job given what you started with and the

fact you're just doing the best you can. I would enjoy seeing your car up

close, and not be critical about the details.

Mine is sort of like yours......I have actually done no body work, but it

needs some due to its being in an accident years ago and "mostly"

repaired. I made my own door panels and put box covers on the seats.

Have had the top and carpets professionlly installed. It looks good but

if you look real close it has faults - that the average spectator doesn't

seem to notice. I get lots of compliments. So, it proves they don't

have to be absolutely perfect. I can drive it whenever I want to....and

that's worth something. So, I wouldn't worry too much.....just drive and

enjoy and improve things as you go.

Rockwood I would not kick your car out of any place. My car still has the remains of the original upholstry with the cotton hanging out under the drivers door handle, Wal Mart Mexican Blankets for front seat cover, water stained rear arm rest and seat ends because the side vent windows leak. The wood grain dash is ruined from sitting out in the sun and from water running across it from the windshield rubber leaks. The paint job is 25 years old and I drive the car everywhere, park it just like I do my old pick up at the stores or anywhere else I shop. I show my car at some local shows with a sign not to be judged, I have no interest in high dollar cars that will not and can not be driven in the rain, on gravel roads. In my club, I do most of the tour routes and have to find smooth rural roads with no patches or some of the members will bitch that I am trying to tear up their car. I remind them it is a car and was meant to be driven, not a work of art to only be displayed. I spent many hours on my back under my car removing all of the crud and grease then cleaned it several times before painting, it now needs to be redone if anyone was to look under it. The next time I pull the front clip and the engine and transmission I will clean and repaint again.

Hey thanx everyone, for the thumbs on my car. I apologize, not trying to stir anything up. Just wanted to give an honest example of a homemade job of a car, that should have been at the crusher, but was rescued years ago by Me

Robert, I agree with Fred, you ought to contact Hemmings and have them do article about your "Driveable Dream"

Fred, my son painted my coupe ten years ago next month with Rustolum (sp) Teal, it was one of his first paint jobs, the paint has held up rather well, but is beginning to show wear. My car should have been junked also, but I liked the lines of the coupe and it did run, so almost 22 years later I drive it and enjoy it, and as you all know, it is a work in progress that never ends, which is worth all the driving enjoyment that I have with the old girl.

I think that makes it much more enjoyable to bring one back from "crusher bait". It's more of a challenge to save a heep than a nice car that needs a little TLC. The more the challenge , the more the appreciation of the finnished product.

One of my parts cars, a 47 club coupe came from a local junkyard that had closed down. The man that owned it the junkyard was well known in the area for having all the old hard to find stuff. When I was a kid me and my buddys would often talk of dragging an old car outta his yard and making it run. Maybe it's a silly thing, but I'd like to make that old coupe haul me and my buddys around. If I do it'll be one off my buckett list, if don't the thought has been entertaining any way. Yea I'm a sucker for old junk!:)

Never my intent to knock any one that does their own work. Just stating that $1K for upholstery by a pro won't get one very much, maybe seats. IMHO, headliners make or break interiors, and is what separates the men from the boys.
