Don Jordan Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 I took my steering wheel off to have it redone. (It's gorgeous) I put it back on and can't get the horn to function properly. I put the wheel on and if I physically push down on the spring and turn on the ignition it's fine. When I let the spring up the horn beeps as it should. I put on the horn ring and the Plymouth horn cap (not sure what it is called) it looked beautiful except when I turned on the ignition the horn beeped. I took it all apart and it seems the horn ring is not pushing down the spring far enough. What's up? I'm sure I've done something silly but can't figure it out. The parts book shows a retainer but it says not for the P15. I don't remember taking one off. This is all so frustrating. The horn ring only goes on one way. Help. Quote
randroid Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Don, If you have a silly horn question it's probably because you have silly horns. Sheesh, intuitively obvious to the casual observer. Sorry but I couldn't resist. A few years ago one of guys with the fuzzy (dice) ran a thread on that subject and it explained why it needs to be setup a particular way. I've had mine apart a number of times and they always worked fine until the last time. I don't recall the remedy but there is one you might find by running a search on it. -Randy Quote

I can't believe (or rule out) the horn relay because if I physically push the spring down and turn the key on nothing happens. I get the feeling the horn ring just isn't pushing down the spring far enough. can someone explain how something can work just fine - you take it off to restore it and it doesn't work when you put it back? Gremlins? The other thing I might do is take apart the horn on my 2 door and see if there is something missing. First I'm going to try (as suggested) spinning the spring around. Otherwise I going to waste a whole day chasing mysteries. Thanks for your help. Quote
claybill Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 not ot be too simplified...but....pressing down on the horn button makes a 'ground' contact...the spring pops it back up and breaks the contact. checkto see if things are logical! in that operation. sometimes there is a ground plate under the spring aganist the wheel itself, somehow contact is not right. basic logic will solve it.....diagram are in parts books.. it only took me 3 days to solve my hown problem a few years back!!!!! have fun..bill Quote

This may sound silly (some will identify) I was doing all the right things I was just doing them wrong. And the real pisser is that while my face was so close to the steering wheel I noticed cracks on my newly restored wheel. So I've got to take it off again. What a circus. Thanks for all your help. Andydodge Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Don..........you mention that your wheel has been restored........the horn mechanism etc inside the steering hub is essentially an earth switch, maybe your newly painted/restored wheel is no allowing a proper earthing to occur?.......just a thought........andyd Quote
martybose Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 On my car the horn will not blow if I push the horn ring down on one of the steering wheel arms, but it works fine if I push it down between the arms. Clearly a matter of how much throw you get, but I haven't tried to fix it, I just pay attention to where I push. Marty Quote
