p24-1953 Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 Are our belts narrow? will they work with a modern a/c compressor? or will i need to switch to a wide belt? will those work with the exg. crank pulley? when i order my new alternator which do i need? Standard 3/8” belt Dual V-Belt for 3/8” belts 1/2” belt-2.6” Diameter 5/8” belt--3” Diameter 5/8 or 3/4” belt--2 1/4” Diameter Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 the wide belt is the issue to the compressor..it is narrow on the modern compressors and as such you will need the narrow belt..being a '53, your pulley should be on the narrow gage. Going to a wider belt will further complicate things... Quote
p24-1953 Posted November 30, 2009 Author Report Posted November 30, 2009 so im good on the a/c but what width should i get on the alt? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 the modern alternator should be of the proper width..odds are if you measure the .375 series belt will be more than enough..if that is light go with the 420 series..best thing to do is get the pulleys together and measure with the most narrow pulleyt..the top of the belt would come close to riding even with the top of the pulley and have room for some wear by having part of the groove open below the belt..the actual surface of the belt edges, not the bottom is the gripping/driving factor....it is best to be a tad proud of the pulley than to be recessed on installion of a new belt...
