have you tried to push the rubber covered bottom..it could very well be a manual override switch you can activate the starter without using the inside push button..these are great for doing tune up and etc when bumping the starter is a necessity..the small buttom on the top is likely the reinforced guide for the plunger when activated..

Hey Tim - I went out this morning and 'tickled' underneath the solenoid where the rubber boot is.... You were right!! Remote starter button!! How cool is that.... I have no idea whether my Dad knew it was such, I certainly didn't (obviously-DUH)... guess there's still some surprises to be had, even on 60+ year old cars...

Would this have been an 'aftermarket' item / replacement at some stage?

Rob, nice job on the wiring.......re the push button solenoid, I have seen them over the yrs, thought that they were a factory installation but not sure, but they do make it easy to start the car when doing engine bay work, just keep the ignition key on and the button is quite useful.........andyd

Hi guys,

Boxer (Rob) 's Dad here again from New Zealand and delighted to see that my old girl Dorothy now has some new innards! What a great wiring job. Well done Rob - something I doubt I would ever have tackled.

As for the remote starting button, well yes I did know about that but I guess we never got around to talking about it when I was handing the car over or indeed discussing electrical things since. Glad it has been revealed though - mighty handy.

So what's the next project????

Cheers all.

Hi

Thought I'd just round this thread out by thanking you all for the compliments! - Thanks:o

I've now resolved the generator/charging issue that I had - not too sure where the problem was, but I think similar to the starter/solenoid issue, something not quite connected or grounding properly.

All good now, and Dorothy is again ticking over nicely.:)

Well, everyone's already said it. Impressive job, Boxer. I will be referring to your pictures when I do mine. Even though all your stuff is on the wrong side. Did I understand correctly that you did not buy a custom wiring harness but pieced yours together a wire at a time?

Nice to have your Dad on board. Maybe we'll get him started on an old car project too.

Well, thanks again. No, I didn't buy a custom harness. As you said, I pieced it together a wire at a time - having it out of the car made this so much easier to do. I'd reckon that if you purchased a custom harness, you could do it without taking out the dash...others that have used a custom one may advise on this...

For me - $$$$$$$ was the big thing and I couldn't extend to one of the custom looms...

As for Dad? - well, Dorothy is actually 'his' old project. Dad had her for 28 years or so before she was passed down to me:D Its a shame that, at the moment, we live a long way from each other (he's in New Zealand) and we can't enjoy working on Dorothy together.
