Arthur1947 Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 So I received my rebuilt fuel pump from antique auto cellar, they did a great job. I put it it back on and fired my p15 up. Mind you I have duel bbs. Things seem to be ok when the choke is pulled out but when I push it in it hesitates and stalls, I my have seen a flame. Any clues? Am I running too rich or too lean? Really need to get this taken care of. Best. ARTHUR Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 It is probably sucking air from someplace that it shouldn't . For example ; at the base of the carbs if they should be loose . Or perhaps the intake manifold . One way to test for air leaks around the intake manifold is to hold an unlit propane torch at the joints and listen for an increase of RPM 's . If you have a vacuum hose for your windshield wipers , is it leaking ? If you have a vacuum line to your distributor , is it leaking ? I don't know the history of your project , has it been alright in the past or are your carb adjustments way out of wack . Is wack a real word ? Quote
claybill Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 it sounds lean. make sure the idle screws are set at 1 and 1/2 turns out, then you can fiddle 1/4 turn each way to get even .....but it also sounds like there is a vac leak somewhere. ..besides propane..you can squirt carb/choke cleaner at all possible orifices and gaskets etc..if a leak it will increase in rpm. Arthur1947 Posted August 13, 2009 Author Report Posted August 13, 2009 All good suggestions. I'll have to try those out tomorrow. It seems as though my #1 carb (close to the firewall) sounds like it is running lean and sucking air causing a stumble. Perhaps the #2 carb is robbing it of fuel? Maybe someone who has a similar setup could chime in. I wonder if my float on #1 has to be higher. Any help would be of value. Best. ARTHUR Quote
48mirage Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 (edited) I found the screws on the body of the carb had backed off just slightly once and was causing a vacuum leak. Only found it when I leaned on the carb and felt it give a little. Edited August 13, 2009 by 48mirage sp Quote
claybill Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 do you ahve dual ex..?? a month ago i was posting a 'bit' about the same problem as you seem to ahve. it was the bit about balancing the vac in the carbs..equal pull at idle type of thing. Since one was workign ok, and the other a little bubbly, i fiddled with everything and was sure there must be something else wrong, maybe with the valves, to cause the un-evenness. i went back to the exhaust tips and could tell that one carb was ok, the other coughing a bit, sputtering. i adjusted some more with the idle adj screws, did the hand over the top of carb trick to test for suction ..eventually (without a vac gage) I got them close... i thnk vacuum is a good place to start..leaks etc. bill Quote
Arthur1947 Posted August 13, 2009 Author Report Posted August 13, 2009 I'll have to check my vacuum and accelerator pump. Best. ARTHUR Quote
Arthur1947 Posted August 13, 2009 Author Report Posted August 13, 2009 I've raised the accelerator all the way on pump carb #1 and lowered it on #2. There is still some hesitation. Seems to run better but this is only when the choke is pulled out. Do you think my floats are too low? I'm guessing my plunger on #1 needs to be set higher to compensate for the way the fuel line feeds #2 first. Suggestions? Best. ARTHUR Quote
cole18cars Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Have a similar setup on a 39 Ply, Offy intake and dual D6A1 carbs. I needed to change my jets which were original to 2 sizes larger. It seems that with twice the air there is one half the vacuum. I also raised the float level to spec. P.S. I live at 9000 ft. so there might be differences at different altitudes. Quote
Arthur1947 Posted August 14, 2009 Author Report Posted August 14, 2009 I adjusted the float closest to the firewall higher than the other carb and it runs much better. When I have the choke pulled out it appears to be working properly and when I push it in it has a slight stumble, which would mean I am still running a little lean correct? Best. ARTHUR Quote
Don Jordan Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 This is a little off topic but I like your air cleaners. Did you make them? Quote
Arthur1947 Posted August 15, 2009 Author Report Posted August 15, 2009 This is a little off topic but I like your air cleaners. Did you make them? Thank you Don, I did make. As a matter of fact I have more canisters if you ever wanted some fabricated. Best. ARTHUR Quote
