Willis Pingel Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 Hi all, I started my 48 b1b up today and discovered I got a leak in the water pump. Question is: How many years will fit this truck? I heard they used this engine in to the 60'S. Will all these water pumps fit? Bill Quote
MBF Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 Willis-there was a long thread on this awhile ago that should answer any of your questions. I know that both the internally and the externally bypass style pumps are available through NAPA and probably most other automotive chains. Check out the attached link, and see which type you need. grey beard Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 Willis, Can you see where it is leaking from? If it is leaking around the shaft, try a little marine grease at the zerk fitting -- they sell the stuff at WalMart. It may be leaking around one of the drivers' side bolt threads. If this is the case, changing the pump may not fix the issue. Several of the bolts that attach the pump to the block thread into the water jacket, and must have sealer on the threads. I know it is very had to see in the area. You may need to pull the radiator to find where it is leaking from. If course, if the pump needs replacing, you'll need to pull the radiator anyway to get it off, unoess you're built like a weasel, or something special like that. I'd pressuize the radiator wirh just a few pounds pressure, and get underneath with a light and try to find the source of the leak first thing, were I doing the job. JMHO Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 Take a very small mirror and look under the pump , look for the weep hole . If it is leaking there , you need to replace the pump . Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 NAPA shows a new water pump for a 1949 b1b 1/2 ton , 218 c.i. engine , at $72 . Part number 42554 . Quote
Willis Pingel Posted June 18, 2009 Author Report Posted June 18, 2009 the pump is leaking at the pulley shaft, so I ordered a rebuilt pump from a local parts store. Should be here tomorrow morning. Thanks Guys for all the info. Bill Quote
