Merle Coggins Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 As I was rolling into town my truck started acting strange. I pulled away from a green light and all was well until I shifted into 3rd. When I continued to accelerate through 3rd the truck started bucking and acting like I had hit a rev limiter, but I hadn't even reved it that high yet. So I short shifted into 4th and it ran good from there. At the next light it did the same thing. Hmm... After that it seemed to be OK, but I didn't need to run through the gears the same way after that. When I arrived at home I backed up into my driveway, and just as I was getting to where I wanted to park to unload "the TV" the engine stalled. "No problem", I think... I'll unload everything then fire it back up and finish backing it into it's parking spot. When the time came it wouldn't fire up no matter what I tried. It would pop and try to fire, but never would run. I finally gave up and decided to give it time to cool down. I'll go out again in a few minutes, after it's had a little over an hour to cool off, and try it again. I wonder if it's time for a new coil. I just happen to have a new on on hand that I got "as a spare". Merle Quote
Jim Gaspard Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 I may be off track, but I'm thinking this may be a fuel pump or supply problem. Maybe a fuel filter clog or begining of a pump failure or crud in the fuel. Doesn't sound electrical even though I don't know enough about failing coil symptoms to give an opinion. I would switch to your spare coil as a simple first step of eliminating causes, then check out the fuel flow. Let us know what you find. Jim in Dallas Quote
Merle Coggins Posted June 1, 2009 Author Report Posted June 1, 2009 Well, it refired after sitting for a little over an hour. But I had to hold it wide open while cranking. So I suspect that it maybe flooded too. I had to do the same thing last night after unloading the TV at our Eau Claire shop. Ususlly I just have to give it slight throttle when I crank it up hot, but last night I had to hold it to the floor to get it to start. I may have multiple things going on. I'll put in the new coil, and lower the float level. I need to fiddle with the accelerator pump again anyway. So while the top's off I'll lower the float level. I'm getting a slight cough under acceleration again, maybe a clogged jet. I also know that I need a new spring for my heat riser. It moves freely, but doesn't work properly. I suspect that it may be staying open and over heating the carb. I'll wire it shut for now until I can get a new spring. Anyone know of a source for them besides Bernbaum? Quote
