distributor question

Did you put the distributor back into the block inthe same location that it came out of the block? You stated that the rotor is in the same location but if you spun the distubutor housing and you marked onthe body where the rotor was point you could be off by 180 degress.

I alwasy mark on the block with chalk a point onthe dist as a reference point so I get it back in the same location and also mark on the lip of the body the location of the rotor.

Always markup things to make sure you get them back in the same rotation and location to elimiante the possibility of being 180 degrees out.

Take your time and alwasy look before you take it apart I can not stress this with the older cars. It looks easy but make it simple for your self. If you put the dist down for a day and then come back to it you have lost your reference poitn if you did not mark it properly.

If the motor was not turned over with the dist out as long as the rotor is back in the same spot it will not be out 180 but the static timing will be off, if the motor was turned over their is a very good chance it is out 180.

If you are getting spark at the points when you open them the condenser is fine. was the motor turned over when the dist was out? i could have had this fixed in less time than i spent typing this. not that big of deal, start at the begining and think what has changed since it last ran.

no the motor wasnt turned over when it was out. i always disconnect the battery when working i have just started working on this car for about a year and a half.. im not that experienced.,but i do know what an engine needs to fire. i have fuel, air, compression, spark at the dist but not at the plug wires.

i just confirmed thats the plug wire are getting spark.. shocked the hell out of me when i went to pull the plug wire off the spark plug. im guessing its the plugs . they are fouled due to all the cracking i have done and not starting. how do i clean fouled plugs? or do i have to replace them?

You should be able to clean the plugs enough (to start the engine) with a wire brush.

Are you 100% certain that the engine wasn't rotated while the distributor was out? Any young men living with you that might have showed a buddy Dad's car?

You sure sound like a timing problem.

Put a new set of plugs in it and it will most likely fire off, check and see if you can find the mark where the hold down bolt was at on the dist before you started this, if not start in the middle and move it about a 1/2" one way or the other from there.

thanks for the troubleshooting page. the coil is fine as well as dist cap, rotor button,im goin g to replace the points and condensor and see if that helps.

If all checks out, you should have spark. If you have spark and it won't crank up, try priming the carb (pour 1/4 cup of gas into it). If it still won't start odds are your timing is off.

I am thinkin his carb is what started this, fouled out the plugs and down hill from there. I would just put a very small amount of fuel in, if any at all. pull the plugs crank it over and dry out the cylinders and new plugs.
