Lou Earle
On engine in the spare parts car it looks like the TDC is at between 10 and 11 on a clock. I know it is not normal but the plug hole in back AND the marks on the vibration dampener so indicate. So what is a body to do ?? I am just going to set the # one plug wire at that point on the cap and go from there- any thing wrong with that? what caused this anomaly? Oil pump not installed correctly? Plymouthy Adams
That would be my guess...this is what establishes the trusted 7 o'clock dist position as the pump gear meshes with the cam gear..if you have established TDC with the #6 and verified by valve position..then you either slide the oil pump out and index it correct or position each plug wire in respect to what you now know. vanbuskirk
I had a 230 engine rebuilt, and it came back with the timing gear one tooth wrong. I had the same problem: the distributor was not at 7 oclock when the crank was TDC. Look to see if the slot in the oil pump is horizontal as viewed from the distributor hole in the block when the engine is TDC. If the oil pump cannot be installed with the slot horizontal, the cam is off a tooth. Dots will not align. Bob
