Had my furd 150 ('98) in the shop, irrigular when stationairy, during driving the engine just stopped when letting go of gas pedal (not funny when you have to brake for a sharp corner and no power steering / power brakes).

Anyway, first thoughts were the fuel injectors but after some talk with the garage guy we basically eliminated that.

So I got a phone call , presumably the MAF sensor is bad(mass airflow sensor).

Ok, so what would that cost me? answer : around 275$ without labor.

Checked the web, these things are around 110$ and with S&H and import duties it will add up. Still a lot of money.

But just order somewhere (there are cheaper ones) is also risky, each engine type seems to have a different MAF sensor.

With all these sensors going bad why do they need to cost so much money.

Have another sensor that is in the transmition, some block of sensors that will set me back 300$ +

And only to get rid of this stupid "check engine" light.

As someone said earlier , you long for the days cars were simple !

Ok, got that off my chest :)

PS MAF in Dutch means crazy / goofy.

Does your truck have OBDII (all domestic US vehicles do)? If so, you should consider getting an inexpensive OBDII code reader.....you'll save the cost of the reader on your first repair. Also, many MAF's can be cleaned. Has your mechanic tried that?

Thanks, I live in Curacao, we have NAPA but that is it.

Problem for them are the shipping costs and the import duties (32% on carparts) as well so everything here is more costly.

The mechanic said there was no signal from the unit so sensor seems to be broken.

John

I should get the OBDII reader, maybe with my next visit to the USA.
