pflaming Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 Question: If I use a 12 volt battery, will the coil explode? The attachment shows how I have it wired. Right top of the coil is negative. Bottom right of the battery is negative. As wired I do not get any spark from the coil wire against the block so something is not correct. Someone exploded their six volt coil with a 12 volt wiring setup, so I am not proceeding until I know. The wire going to the coil is only tied to the terminal block by a string, block is not in use. MBF Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 Pat-I'd put a ballast resistor in there. If you take the dist cap off, and put the coil wire (from center post in distributor)to ground you should be able to make the coil fire by opening and closing the points with a screwdriver. If you've got spark from the high voltage lead of the coil, when you put it back together if its in time you should have fire at the plugs. If you're running 12 volts for your test you may have to reverse the low votage wiring on your coil. Mike Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 It appears you already have a ballast resistor in the circuit. How do you plan on turning the engine off the way you have it wired? You might consider installing a toggle switch or at minimum an alligator clip so you dont have a run-away engine should the throttle stick wide open if the engine actually starts and runs. Quote
pflaming Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 Don, that risistor was only holding the wire by the string, didn't know what is was, thankyou. Yes have wired in a switch since the picture. Today the engine tried to start, got good spark at all plugs, but evidently flooded out. Will attach it again tomorrow. Challenging. . . Little things!!!!! Quote
