aero3113 Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 Last night I decided to pull my steering wheel and and fix the cracks and repaint it. So far it is looking great. I used high strength epoxy to fill the cracks and the sanded it down smooth. I used krylon primer and then krylon dover white, I still want to do another coat of the white then a couple coats of clear. I will post pics when finished. Quote
aero3113 Posted November 11, 2008 Author Report Posted November 11, 2008 It came out better than expected! I have to wait two weeks to let the paint cure then I can spray the gloss on. Good thing I called krylon to find out when to use the clear, I was going to spray the clear on tonight but they said it would bubble the paint. http://s408.photobucket.com/albums/pp163/aero3113/Steering%20wheel/ Quote
Bingster Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 You did a great job! That'sot easy to get smooth a finish from an old cracked wheel. I have to do mine. What epoxy did you use? I was going to get the Eastwood kit but it's all probably similar. Quote
aero3113 Posted November 12, 2008 Author Report Posted November 12, 2008 I used Vantico Fastweld 10, rapid setting epoxy structural adhesive. This stuff sets very quick and very hard. Im not sure where to get it, I guess you can google it. A friend gave me mine Quote
aero3113 Posted November 12, 2008 Author Report Posted November 12, 2008 Found it, third one down http://www.shopmaninc.com/adhesives.html Quote
aero3113 Posted November 12, 2008 Author Report Posted November 12, 2008 It took about 4 hours of sanding to get it where I was happy Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Nice job. Looks like a new wheel. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Looks excellent. Did you take a "before" picture? Quote
aero3113 Posted November 17, 2008 Author Report Posted November 17, 2008 I forgot to this is the best before pic I have, you cant really see the cracks but they are there . The worst ones were near the center you can kind of see them and alot of smaller cracks all around the wheel. Quote
Alexander Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 great work. very inspriring. anyone know what the color would have been on a 1951 coronet? Quote
pflaming Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 That '50 Plymouth dash brings back memories. Dad bought me a '50 'fast back' without my knowing. I was livid, a "PLYMOUTH"!!! But that car took me from Western NE to Central Calif and back in 1958. Always drove it by the temp guage and never had a problem. Quote
