aero3113 Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 Is there anyway to keep good chrome from pitting? Quote
claybill Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 you are probably referring to the pitting when chrome is done on potmetal. it pits! the pits have to be soldered closed and then smoothed before re-plating. regular chrome on steel will rust if a portion along the edge lifts up and water can seep inbetween the 2 metals. bill Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 The best way to prolong the pot metal from pitting is to make sure the whole part is sealed, front, back and all edges. Moisture can still get to the part if you don't seal the backside with some sort of clear sealer. The chrome front should be kept polished to help keep it from pitting. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 vacuum packaging.......but that is not practical... as you may notice..it is like tooth decay..clean and brush all you want and you will still get a cavity...just fewer over time and less trouble to fix...this ole pot metal had built in flaws just waiting to happen..keeping it clean, dry and waxed will go a long way..but it is something you have to stay on top of..
