Big50Dodge Posted October 23, 2008 Report Posted October 23, 2008 Covered before ? I was thinking about bearings lately. I wondered if there was an easy way to translate a roller bearing to the ball/cage bearings in say ..... the front axle..? (both inner and outer). Other areas where the ball & cage could be converted over to a roller bearing ? Likely, the race and the bearing would have to be swapped out. There must be some sort of way to translate over. Wandering into the local NAPA and spending a hour with the guy might be fun, but he has other customers and I don't want to spend an hour there. Quote
cwcars88 Posted October 23, 2008 Report Posted October 23, 2008 I did that on my 57 Chev, NAPA just used the numbers on the stock bearings to come up with a roller bearing. Wayne Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 23, 2008 Report Posted October 23, 2008 Why would you want to change from a dual tapered roller bearing setup to ball bearings? Ball bearings can't handle axial (sideways) loads like you'd have on a wheel hub. That's why tapered roller bearings are used on things like that. In my opinion tapered roller bearings are much better than ball bearings in most applications. I have even changed the bearings in the steering head of my motorcycle from balls to rollers. It's a big improvement in handling. Merle Quote

You first say "wondered if there was an easy way to translate a roller bearing to the ball/cage bearings" You then say "Other areas where the ball & cage could be converted over to a roller bearing" What direction are you headed here? Brain is in 5th gear while fingers are in first gear syndrome. Isn't there a pill for that ? Sorry for the confusion. Quote
