Bob Riding Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 I just read in the paper that Tex Davis, of Fresno, just passed away. He did my engine a couple of years ago for my '40 Dodge business coupe. He was a funny old guy. The obit said he was 78 and had been an auto mechanic for 65 years! I just talked with his boss (Jerry Turner, Turner Auto Wrecking) about two weeks ago and everything seemed fine. I was planning to take a P28 motor in to Tex to rebuld. Now I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to get the engine work done...any of you Bay Area or L.A. guys know of shops that can rebuild these flatheads? I live near Fresno Bob Quote

Don Coatney Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Really sorry to hear of a seasoned flathead mechanic passing. My moment of silence will follow. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Bob , Stockton engine and machine , 826 North Union Street , Stockton . 209-466-4547 . I can't find the old guys name , ask for the guy with all of the experience on mopar flat heads . He did mine 2 years ago and I am happy with it . He isn't fast or cheap . With tax I paid $2780 . He supplied all parts . There was only 3 guys in the shop , the older guy and 2 younger guys , the shop was kept up nice in an old building . Quote
Bob Riding Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Posted October 13, 2008 Thanks...I will contact them...that's more than I was expecting to pay, however...what all did you get for that price? Bob Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Bob , I can't find most of that paperwork right now but I remember new timing chain and sprockets , brass water distribution tube , pistons , oil pump , valves , valve guides , machining surfaces on manifolds and head and top of block , machineing the cylinders , all parts and gaskets , etc . He set the valves too and I was surprised when he said that I would never have to touch valve adjustment again ... and I haven't . I did purchase a new water pump and installed that myself . He said to not let it idle on initial start up . Quote
