55 Fargo Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 Hi all, my rust repairs inside my trunk have been a while ago, it is painted inside with a stain black, I currently have black indoor/outdoor carpet on the floor. I am thinking about what to use as a permanent covering on the floor protion of the trunk. I also need to do some repair area on the rear outer edge of the trunk floor, the portion that rises up, in the middle of it is the latch striker plate for the trunk latch assembly. As this 4 inch wide portion is rough, I am thinking of running the carpet or rubber flooring up and onto this section, this would cover all the ugly beat-up look to it, or I can use a filler and smooth it over and paint it I suppose. Just fishing for some ideas, and to see if my idea would work or not...........Fred Here is a pic of my trunk, at the time of the this pic, it was dusty and dirty in there with wires hanging, it's cleaned up now with better paint, although it still gets dusty as the trunk lid weather strip is in rough shape. My question is this, would it be alrigh to cover the whole floor including the rear section that rises up on the floor where the striker plate is mounted? Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 This is the way I had mine done. Dennis:cool: Quote

Rodney Bullock Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 I don't have anything back there now. I have a Bus. coupe so I would need a whole lot of material. I do have boards on the back of the package tray and trap door. I bet if I got some carpet on the floor back there it would be alot more quiet. Fred do you have the board that goes on the back of your back seat? That is a noise barrier. Quote

Hi Rodney, no I don't just through out the remains of the only piece I had, it was even too rough for a template, will make something up myself, maybe use, some 1/8 masonite, with flexifoil or carpet attached to it , that is a good sound deadner..........Fred Quote
RobertKB Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 Fred, as an alternative you might want to try to pick up a roll of ribbed rubber which would would look like the original. I have an original rubber mat both in my '53 and my '48 (see pic) but put carpet in my '38 as it had nothing when I got it. Wish the one in the '48 was in better shape but like the car they are only original once. You could put a sound deadener under the rubber to make things quieter. Just a thought. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 Fred, you can do most or all the trunk yourself. However--- I had the upholstry guy cut, bind and install the carpet in the car and in the trunk. I had purchased a roll of carpet at a wholesale place in Kansas City. What I have is some commercial carpet, with auto padding on top of it, then the carpet. I did make my own side panels out of heavy cardboard from the Hobby Lobby store. Took some paper and made a preliminary form to get the size and shape. Cut the panel, put on some cotton batting, then covered with vinyl that matched the door panels. My biggest problem is I can not make the corners just right. The center section, behind the seat, I fixed so I can pull it up about a foot.....so I can store the jack and any other smaller items behind it. There's about a foot of room back there beneath the well for the top. Put a strip of wood across the bottom to give it weight and keep it straight. Tucks behind the hump over the rear end. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 I took the easy (lazy) way out, and put the rubber stripping in the channel instead of onto the edge of the deck lid. Will attach it to the lid later when in the mood to mess with it. Better than none at all. Also made my own kick panels and door panels. Not perfect but look pretty good.
