daddyo23 Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 The car, that is. Last week took a 450 mile trip with no big hassles. It did heat up abit when I was pushing it,I'd slow down and she'd drop back to 180. The problem I did have, and today also on a 100 mile trip, is I'd be flying along, enjoying the ride. When I had to come to a stop, I would have to jab the pedal to keep the rpm's up 'cause it wanted to die when it idled down. Now, I think it may be because I have a leak in the gas tank. Air is getting in, so the flow might not be kosher. So I'll put this out here for the experts to chime in on. The idle is set at 550. Any other ideas? vacuum leak, maybe? Any suggestions will be avidly read and appreciated. Wayne P. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 Wayne, Don't think a leak in the tank would cause the problem. After all, even without a leak, the tank is vented by the gas cap. I would be looking at possibly a filter that is maybe partially clogged, or dirt in the fuel line someplace to start with. Or.........maybe the old car is just trying to say. "Hey, I'm tired, give me a little rest now.":D Quote
daddyo23 Posted August 17, 2008 Author Report Posted August 17, 2008 Thanks, Norm. I was going to replace the line when I drop the tank. I'll change the filter, too. Sometimes I'll see the fuel bubbling up in the filter, very strange. Anyway, in a couple of months the old gal is getting a big makeover. Hope to post progress as I go. Just have to learn the best way to post pics, not the brighest bulb on the tree when it comes to 'puters. Quote
Normspeed Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 You might recheck the idle mixture adjustment, with the motor fully warmed up. Does it only happen after a long highway run? Does it clear up again after a few stop and go's? Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 Norm could this guy be getting vapor lock? How hot was it outside to day when he drove it? And I would defenitly check out the fuel filter. Does he have a glass bowl type? I have that type and I can tell right away if the fuel is being blocked by just looking at the clear bowl. Also what I like about my filter is that I can clean it our with no problemo's. Jon Quote
Lou Earle Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 "When u are sure it is a fuel problem check you yr ignition first" Wendell Mimbs 2006. I would check my timing and then my points- that symptom is consistent with a timing / worn/loose points. Lou Quote

Does it clear up again after a few stop and go's? It does seem to clear up after it's been running slower. I had to idle along in traffic for 30 mins. before I got to the track and it did o.k., it seemed a little rich. Lou Good point. I was thinking about the way it warms up when I'm running at highway speed. Thanks for the advice, guys. All will be tried in the next couple of days. Wayne P. Quote

Plugs were replaced and fuel filters replaced. Still had trouble. Then I went ahead and rebuilt the carburetor and that fixed the problem. Runs like a top since. I looked for vacuum leaks and other issues for months before finally settling down and rebuilding the carb. Quote
daddyo23 Posted August 18, 2008 Author Report Posted August 18, 2008 Right now everything is stock. I'd like elect. ignition, but I'm keeping it 6 volts. I do have a dual carbsetup with B+B's and an exhaust manifold waiting for it after it gets rebuilt. I'm doing .060 over with .050 off the heads. I'm looking at different grinds for the cam, but, that will come in time. I'm going to re-check timimg and air/fuel mixture. Right now I believe I have it set at 2@ btdc. Wayne P. Quote
