Are your DeSoto's the american models? I have to redo the panels because the car was reupholstered on the late 70s, so the originals are long gone. And the ones they made were pretty bad. Luckly, the design was pretty much kept, so the curved chrome bar was retained (I assume it was placed more or less on the same place). I have no idea were to find used door panels really. The few DeSotos (or Plymouths or Dodges) like this that exists here are in quite bad shape. We looked into a couple of junkyards, but all the interiors were pretty (or totally) gone. About old car parts here... there are not many options. some mechanical bits, like the gaskets, can be found on old stores, and other little things I bought online in USA and then have it shipped. The car has been in the family since the late 50s, and it was complete and in good shape, so there were not many parts really needed.

I guess it could work, I'll have it mind in case I can't find enough of the color ones, or they get too expensive.
-
Thanks! I made a bid on a pair that seem to be equal to mine, now let's hope I'm the only one

Hello everyone! The car is finally getting closer to being complete. New tires and tubes went in, the seats are done and istalled and on monday the car goes back to the upholstery shop for the doors and floor, and after that alignment and a couple of electrical details. But, about the door trim, are the things in the pic called "escutcheons"? (asking to know what to seach on ebay) Any tip on where to get them? Some of the ones on the car are quite damaged and I would like to get new ones. Thanks!

Hello everyone, I'm again asking for your help. A few weeks ago I finally bought the "steering column and gearshift boot" from oldmoparts.com, and while the interior car is being redone, it's time to install it. As far as I know, to do it I have to remove the steering wheel to pass the boot through. But it's also needed to disassemble the gearshift. So, I get to the question. Does anyone have some kind of exploded view of both ends of the gearshift? (similar to the attached). I tried google, but nothing useful showed up. Best Regards and thanks!

Thanks! I just checked the link. The shoulder belts seem quite a bit more expensive, although I think the mounting hardware is better (it at least looks better)
-
@Plymouthy Adams I had not checked about them meeting the regulations, thanks! @bones44 what type of latch did you choose?

Hello, quick question: does anybody here have any experience with seatbeltsplus.com? I forgot where I got the link, I'm about to buy seatbelts and would like to know if anyone has used their products (speedway parts didn't have anything, summit racing was expensive). A side question, has anyone used retractable seatbelts? not sure if they will fit...

@medium_jon, I had assumed that the connector would be the same. Is it smaller? or is it a different pattern? I know it's kind of nit pick, but I don't really want them to be too flat (we are also adding auxiliary lights to add a bit, so there's that)
-
thanks for the answers! @Mark D, I'm looking at them on ebay but they look kind of flat, maybe it's the photo? was the light they made any good? compared to the originals I'm quite sure that sealed beams are acceptable here... but the car has not been to an inspection in the last 20 or 25 years, I might have to check

Hello! Where I live is now impossible to get 6 volt sealed beams, so I was about to buy a pair from ebay. Talking about it with my father, we thought about using headlights that look like sealed beams but have replaceable lamps inside. The reasoning is this: the car currently has the original 6 volt electric system, but maybe it'd be good to convert it to 12 when something breaks. In that case, having relpaceable lamps would save us from the change of the whole sealed beams, just the lamps. Has anyone tried this kind of headlights? are they any good? I doubt they'll look right, and also that they'll work properly, maybe those will be worse than true 6 volt sealed beams? Thanks for your help!

thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I asked for the samples from SMS, and I'll see then what happens... In the meantime, I'm about to buy the steering and gearshift boot from oldmoparts.com

@Don Coatney they look good! I'd like to do that because as you say it is way cheaper, but sadly the seats now are very plasticky and it's impossible to drive more than 5 minutes without sweating, so I'd prefer to take that out. I really like your door panels, windows frame and dashboard! @casper50 thanks for the links, I'll check them. Have you ever bought anything from them?

Congrats on your fix! Sorry to hijack your post, but since the oil level was mentioned, I have to ask, is it bad for the engine to have too much oil? it currently sits a bit above the full mark on the dipstick...

Hello everyone, I'm again asking for help about the 46 DeSoto SP15! For some time now we've been trying to get an appropiate fabric to redo the seats and door panles (the interior was redone in the 70s, so there are original fabrics in the car), but we can't get anything close here (Uruguay). The only available things are for modern cars (80+), vinyls, leather, or fabrics for furniture. Because of this, the more probable thing until now is to do it with leather (although it is a 4 door, and originally it was cloth. I think convertibles were leather). Is it possible to get any fabric close to the original in the US? (it doesn't have to be strictly original, just something close in design and color) any that can be recommended? The only I heard of (here in p15-d24) is SMS Auto Fabrics. I sent them a question and I am waiting for the response. Thanks for your help! Tomorrow I will upload a photo of the current seats and the options we have here now, and I attach now a photo of the exterior, just because I like it! Finally, and not related to the question, I finally checked and the block is 23 inches long. If I remember what I read some time ago, that and the vin number (11 538 034) confirm it was built in Detroit. Regards, Federico

@DJ194950, I live in Uruguay, so I have to buy from the web and trust what the web pages say. But to be sure, I checked the part number in the manufacturer page @medium_jon, I think the link is this: http://www.robertsmotorparts.com/store/
-
@Tom Skinner, thanks for the tip about roberts!

Thanks to all for your answers! @Andydodge, I was guessing it should be vented, thanks for the confirmation!. The current cap on the car is not in great shape, and since a new cap is cheap I was thinking about changing it. According to the Stant webpage, part 10625 is vented: Product Line: Fuel Tank Cap Part Number: 10625 Status: Available to Order Height (IN): 3.50 Width (IN): 3.00 Length (IN): 3.50 Product Weight (LBS): 0.40 Description: OE Equivalent Fuel Cap - 2 7/8"" Vented (1 7/8"" x 7/8"" Shallow Cam) Lock: Non-Locking

Hello, I am looking for gas caps, and I'm not really sure about the measurements. Has anyone used Stant gas caps? are they good? According to the people at Stant (by mail), it should be the part #10625, "With the pictures that you sent me I would look at part number 10625 it is the same as the 10623 except it is for 1 7/8 filler neck diameter." I'm not really sure how to measure filler neck diameter (in the narrow part? or where the extended bits on the cap are? it looks like it's the latter) Thanks!

that is my guess too. thanks for the tip about where to buy the springs and the compliment on the car!

Hello, the DeSoto is finally getting to the part where we take care of the interior, so, new questions... The car has long ago lost the original door upholstery and the replacement was not high quaity. It only had one of the springs that hold the escutcheon against the window handle. What we don't know is if the door handles also should have those springs. The door sheetmetal has a place for the spring in the window handle, but it doesn't look that way for the door handle. Should it have spring in the door handle escutcheons? Should they be installed "inside the hole"? (as shown in one of the photos) I'm asking because I am about to buy the springs, and don't know if I need 4 or 8. Aside from all that, it got the whitewalls installed!

@Oldguy48, yours look really good, congrats! I checked Bernbaum (oldmoparts.com, right?) and the only ones I see ("C-454 Rubber sill mat, 4-door") are about the same price as plymouth doctor. ($525-$520) I'm not the best at DIY, but maybe it's worth the try...

Thanks for you answers, I will contact Plymouth Doctor, although 200 each is more than I was hoping for, and I need international shipping on top of that. Are there any other options?
