  1. actually his given name was John Sterling Morten Burke...........and as far as the young women......oh my, but there was a bunch of 'em...john...oh yes and by the way Mr. "oh so glib of the tougne" you still have'nt shown me the light as to which road to take though I have provided you with oh so much information...I need the self proclaimed "Master of Mopar" to point his majic finger and say "here, little grasshopper".....john
  2. Well I have done went (Tennessee style English) and hooked up the oil lines and I am sure we'll find out some day if they are right or wrong. The pressure is coming out of the bottom hole in the block, so I ran a 1/4 line to the inlet on the cannister. I then ran a 5/16 line back to the upper hole for return. I chose these sizes of line because that was the size of fittings already in place on the cannister...I also decided the bobbed fenders I put on looked chunky so I streamlined them up a bit using a saber saw and a metal cutting blade. I then covered the edges with a vinyl door edge trim...I like it much better...The hot rod has been named "The Morton Meteorite"..Morton was one of my dad's middle names. He was a profound mentor to me, teaching me much about machine work, fabrication and hard work. He also passed that middle name to my Uncle who taught me all about welding and extold the virtues of fast cars, cheap whiskey and young women..what more could a guy ask for....John
  3. Well I took both plugs out of the oil ports and cranked the engine over...oil came out of the bottom hole only...ie: must mean I have a full flow system...I don't know how to tell if the filter cannister is that style or a by- pass type...This one came off of a 1950 Desoto AND I had a 1954 Chrashler NYKR (331 hemi) that also had the identical aftermarket filter on it...so I am still looking for comments...John
  4. I'll try that...ain't worried about the mess...gonna change oil anyway...here is a couple of pics of the vintage filter mounted....Manufactured in the 50's in Lincoln NE. my home town...Insert requires one large roll of UNUSED bun wipe. you have to remove the doot-de-doot (cardboard roll) before you put it in....John...Don, I tink yer stuff is goin' out 2 morrow....john
  5. If i were to have the plugs open and cranked the engine over, could i tell by which hole the oil came out of whether it is a bypass system or what ever????
  6. The engine was plugged when I got it from George..(it's an S-18)...1953... Never did run a filter.....Oil pressure runs about 60-70 psi when cold,.....drops to to around 45-50 when hot...according to your drawing, when the plug is installed, the return goes into the top hole...Does it go into the bottom hole on a bypass system?? The only things we could come up with on the cam is to much spring pressure causing the cam to flex and crystalize or just about any other cockamamie thing you could think of....You could see on the broken edges where it had been running cracked for some time.....Now back to the filter...what do you think I should do...If my engine blows, I need somone to send the bill to....John
  7. OK Don, as I understand it, using the wrong filter flow system would possibly deep 6 the engine......Last year I did not run a filter. The block fittings were plugged off....The unit I was going to use is a vintage aftermarket that I took off of a 50 Desoto but as I understand you, I still won't know if I have a bypass system or the other unless I drop the pan and see if the plug is there...Right? or do I missunderstand what yer saying....The pan is NOT coming off...jb
  8. Many tankz Merle....John
  9. I am mounting an outboard oil filter on my Desoto engine. There are 2 outlets low on the block on the drivers side for the lines to hook up to. I can't remember which is the line to the filter and which one is the return line. There are plugs in the outlets now. They are lined up vertically, one above the other. anyone have an answere for me? thanxz, John
  10. The Desoto, flat 6 in my hot rod has a "Spitfire" head on it and came off of a Chrysler motor....NOW.....I was told by George Ashe that..(he is the one who put the engine together)..That my Spitfire head is of the "closed chamber" style...I still don't know what that means...but is supposed to be a good head.....John Burke
  11. Well I finally got the hot rod painted it's new color for the summer...A dark, brick red with a lot of flattner in the paint. Only had a couple of small runs that are of no importance....besides, 5 ft. is close enough to look at it...If your any closer than that and you say somthing I don't like.....your dog food....As for the graphics, my SIL's BF has a sign shop so I had him make me some vinyl stencils then I hand brushed the paint on so it looks a little freehandy..53 was my number when I circle burned in a super modified. I hand brushed the shadows. I cut down some rough Model A fenders and put them on the back. They were both left hand fenders but I found an area on both that worked right or left and sliced these pieces out with my plasma cutter..Now all I have left is the exhaust header which is at the powder coaters where it will recieve a hi-temp aluminized coating that polishes out like chrome only cheaper..pics of that next week when i get it back and on.....then we go cruzin'....John
  12. Well the hot rod is nearing ready for the summer...tonite I prepped it and masked it off and shot a bunch of RED paint on it. I used a lot of flattner in the paint but I think it might be to bright yet. After i study this for a while I may go down to the paint store and have them mix up some more red only much darker....john
  13. I guess I really meant to infer that my Uncle died after he got the OK to go ahead with it...John
  14. Hey guy's, my Unkle's doctor told him..." It is extremly healthy to flatuate"...just before he died.....John
  15. due to more stringent laws, the quality of chrome plating is not what it used to be...it is more prone to blueing, rusting and chipping.....there are special hi-temp powder coatings for such applications as i am using..a variety of colors is available and the "silver" is realllllly close to chrome...any way...come spring in a month or 2 I will be able to report back...John
  16. I had one like it in the old exhaust....you could hear it coming from about 1.5 miles away...sounded neat...John
  17. I put on some 2" ones from speedway and they fit fine.....BUT...I had a Barracuda re:cool: ar end in it... Anyway i took them out and lowerd the front end 3"....I like it better that way...got the 3" kit from PlyDo....John
  18. Since I am spucing up the Desoto powered hot rod I decided to fabricate a new exhaust to replace the hurry-up one I had on there before. I bought some mandrel bends and a megaphone frome speedways along with a kick-out and some bolt on flanges. It took a lot of trial and error to get it this far but now it is all tacked together and is ready to come off for final weldup. I will bolt the header plates to a heavy bar while welding to keep them from warping out of position. Next it goes to the powder coater. We have a guy here who coats all of Speedways header assemblies. It polishes out just like chrome...Pictures of that when i get it back. Notice the "suppository" style muffler that gets shoved up the tapered pipe before the kickout is bolted on...more to come, John
  19. Here are a couple of new items for my photo collection. The first is a neat old hot rod and the other a 1916 dated postcard showing an Indian motorcycle. The plates are Oregon dated 1916...enjoy...John
  20. The body was a 28 modelA coupe somone had cut the top off of.g and bent it theshape of the body....Go to www.msnusers.com/streetroadster ...that should have a lot of pic on it...John
  21. Spring is closer so I am getting the hot rod ready for warm weather cruizing. Change is what it is all about so I put in a new fuel tank...a 16 gallon Hienekin keg...the old tank only held 8 gal. and I was always dipsticking it to see how much I had left..I switched from traditional steering to a new "Flaming River" vega unit for cross steering...much less "bump" steer..Then I got tired of looking at those modern carbs I got from inline so I went with a pair of rebuilt Holley 94's...very cool looking, easier action on the linkage and I can actually tune them myself....Later it gets a new Red paint job that will be "antiqued".. and the addition of my old racing numbers ..pics on that when i get to it...John
  22. Hi there Don....fraid I can't help you on the price cause I don't know anything about them cept i'd love to own one
  23. Dominic...here is a picture of my Desoto powered hot rod...It's a 251 ci motor with a milled head and a dual intake by Edmunds...I just finished putting on Holly 94's tonite. I am running a 350 turbo automatic using an adaptor from Wilcap... I am using an 8" ford rear end from a 63 fairlane. I had 3.00 gears but am upping that with a 3.40 pumkin for a bit more bite off the line. I really don't give a hoot what the gas milage is...John
  24. Thanxz...I do believe ALL of the trim is with the car....John
  25. Here is a pic of the grill...near mint as i can tell
