  1. Steele has a rectangular shaped rubber that seems to fit flush into the channel. Metro has a contoured rubber that has a groove to fit over the metal lip on the car channel.
  2. I'm searching for the right weatherstrip for my trunk lid channel. Anybody out there replace theirs on a '47-'48 Desoto or other Chrysler product?
  3. I'm trying to find the right rubber weatherstrip for the trunk lid channel. But there seems to be two numbers for the weatherstrip and I am confused as to what's what. Metro Rubber has weatherstrip that seems to be like the one I took off the car, althought it was so bad I could barely make out the profile. Then Steele has another that saays it replaces a certain Desoto number, which it does, but where?
  4. What exactly is the deck lid? I thought it was the trunk (luggage compartment) door (lid?) but the parts book lists the deck lid and trunk lid as different parts?
  5. I just wanted to give a plug to Metro Rubber for sending me a free sample of some trunk rubber for my Desoto. I offered to buy a foot but they sent me it for free. Now that's customer service!
  6. Okay, I stand corrected!
  7. So before buying one of these radiators, I should take mine in to a radiator shop for what?
  8. Thanks guys, but I have the wiring diagram. I need to know how all the parts go together on the steering column.
  9. I just purchased a directional signal unit for my '47 Desoto and cannot find a parts drawing in my S-11 parts book. It lists all the parts but that's it. Anybody have a schematic of how all the parts fit together?
  10. Should king pins be replaced as a matter of course? After all those years, wouldn't they be worn to the point of needing replacment?
  11. Haven't I seen somewhere a firm who rebuilds fluid drive units?
  12. I saw a You Tube video about wood graining your own pieces with inks. It really looked pretty easy, really. Anybody try it? There's also a firm who makes film transfers you can use to wood grain parts.
  13. I see NOS ones, but where would one find a new one?
  14. I know that the front bearing dust seal on my '47 Desoto also has a fiber seal that fits into a groove around the metal seal. The shop manual tells how to roll this fiber seal to set it into the groove. I see where seals are available, but no mentioon of the fiber part. I wonder if they come with the fiber part? You're supposed to soak them in light oil before inserting them.
  15. When I first got my old car, I immediately went for the front brakes and most everything bolted onto the car. I did label most of them and they are all in containers. Some things like sheet metal I did restore and paint. Now, with a few years to think about things, I am trying to figure out where to attack first? I have most of the parts to do the front brakes and such. But then I wonder about things like ball joints and parts that receive wear and I should repair or replace. Naturally, the interior should be either before or after paint. I've redone some under-the-hood stuff like the air cleaner, generator and of course the dip stick!! I'd appreciate your experience in these matters.
  16. Yeah, I've heard of them. They must totally sandblast the metal and get them back to specs.
  17. A few years back I seem to recall that some aftermarket brake cylinder vendors didn't have quality products. Who is recomended for brake cylinders today?
  18. Thanks! I'll have to find somebody around here in Iowa that has experience with these engines, or can any competant rebuilder do the work?
  19. The engine on my '47 Desoto started and ran when I bought her six years ago, and it had been sitting awhile before that, I want to get it in good, runable condition. I guess the minimum work would be valves and rings. How much do you think a total rebuild would cost, and would I need that? Yeah, it's hard to know.
  20. I used to bel;ong to another Mopar forum but I cannot remember the name. It wasn't AACA. It had kind of a poetic name.
  21. After being away from the forum for a few years, I'm back and working on "Carlo" again, a 1947 Desoto Custom. Where is a good source for new wheel bearings? I assume these are best bought new rather than NOS, but does anybody make new ones? Also, what is a ballpark figure to rebuild my engine? It ran when I bought the car about six years ago. It may only need rings and valves. Thanks.

  24. Thanks but actually mine is in better shape but still not usable..
  25. That looks like mine (1947) and is exactly what I want to restore.
