I checked all wire connections and tested the following:
Relay clicks when grounded
Solenoid clicks as well when relay clicks
Kickdown switch clicks on each forward post when grounded
Lockout clicks when grounded
Governor clicks when grounded
Checked cable to make sure lockout switch is engaged all the way up
Still no OD after solenoid and relay clicks after cut-in speed is reached
I just put this overdrive in last week and replaced all the fluid in both the front and back.
Is it hard to find parts and replace? I’m going to pull it this afternoon and check it out.
Hey guys!
I was driving into town last night and my Overdrive started to make noise and then all of a sudden I was thrown out of OD and back into direct 3. since then the OD will not engage. It sounds like the situation that Dodgeb4ya’s described. What can I do to fix it?
hey thanks guys! I originally ordered the relay believing that they, “ the the shop I bought it from", ordered me a locking relay. glad you let me know it’s not. I’ll have to return it and give them the part number you showed me.
Thanks agin!

Yes, that sounds much better! Thanks Jim and Merle for your expertise!
I can’t wait to get the kickdown switch working. I’ve been driving this old girl with a standard 3 speed since forever and it’s been a slow go. I had found a 54 with overdirive last year at a local salvage yard and had been working on the guy to sell me the R10 ever since. He finally sold it to me a couple of weeks ago and I did the transplant last weekend. Boy what a difference it makes going down the road!
I’m using GL 1 in 90 weight for lubrication and I was able to give it one test run on Sunday. The O/D shifted in and out in second and third gear with ease
Any other recommendations on this overdrive such as maintenance or things to watch for would be most appreciated. Now that I finally have this, I want to make sure it lasts.
Thanks again for your help!

Whoops! I forgot to add:
Power connects to 30.
So here is my theory of all the connections:
Main power connects to 86
Shift knob switch switch connects to 85
O/D Solenoid Connects to either 87 or 87a
Power connects to 30
It looks like these terminals are labeled 85, 86, 87, 87a and 30. In looking at you response Jim, I’m just making a preliminary guess of the following:
Main power connects to 86
Shift knob switch switch connects to 85
O/D Solenoid Connects to either 87 or 87a
Does this sound right or do I have it mixed up?
Thanks again Jim, for your response!
Ok Thanks!
The 6 volt relay I received came in todays mail and it looks to be a Bosh relay. now that I’m looking at it, it appears to have just numbers instead of numbers and letters. Here is some pictures of it.
Any Ideas?
Thanks,

Hello All!
I’m a new member to this forum. Last week I purchased a Borg Warner OD R10 out of an old 54 Cranbrook and successfully transplanted it into my 51 Cranbrook. The original kickdown switch on the 54 was mounted on the firewall in between the the brake and clutch peddle. This seemed really strange to me since all of my research shows a kickdown switch being attached to the carb or throttle linkage. I can show a picture if anyone would like to see the setup. After looking through your posts I’m really interested in utilizing a fluid drive switch/relay option and doing away with the original kickdown switch. I did purchase a VW, 6 volt headlight relay which has 5 post on it and being new to relays I was wondering if anyone would be able to explain how to properly attach each wire to the relay on order for the fluid drive switch to properly work. The wire setup for my OD is original and has not been altered in any way as of yet.
Any info would be very appreciated,
Thanks,
Dutchman
