  1. @TodFitch Wow ok. How did you first get it to run?? Did you have to use 12 volts or pull start it? @Ivan_B I was thinking about that. I'll try the open flame on the plugs if they get wet again.
  2. @Sniper Will do. @Los_Control Yeah ok that does make sense. I will try again tomorrow with a charged up battery and let you know the results.
  3. @Sniper The readings are: 1 - 55 2 - 60 3 - 80 4 - 70 5 - 50 6 -60 Yeah I'm using new plugs. I was thinking that and a combination of not enough cranking speed. We'll try again tomorrow with a charged up battery.
  4. I have a '49 Plymouth thats been sitting for 30+ years. Low compression. We got it running yesterday for about 3 seconds. We ended up putting oil in the cylinders and that got it to pop off. Then tried it again right after and no luck. Tried it again today doing the same thing, oil in the cylinders right before start. No go. Made sure the battery was charged but it is loosing its charge quickly when we crank on it. The plugs were also wet today when we tried it so how did it work yesterday? Would putting too much oil in soak them down too much to get spark fast enough?
  5. @Los_Control Ok thank you. I will keep that i mind.
  6. I'm looking into getting a new coil for my 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe. I couldn't identify any part numbers or markings on the old coil. I could see the beginnings of a "AUT" for autolite I assume. I was wondering if it mattered if I get the exact same part # for swapping coils? Would this one work? I'm still running a 6v system. https://www.partsgeek.com/6f7xhy5-plymouth-special-deluxe-ignition-coil.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=ff&utm_content=DN&utm_campaign=PartsGeek+Google+Base&utm_term=1949-1950+Plymouth+Special+Deluxe+Ignition+Coil+Standard+Motor+Products+49-50+Plymouth+Ignition+Coil&cid=18313611776&gclid=CjwKCAjw9-6oBhBaEiwAHv1QvNLwqhpQpNwweSCXTDr4s_GWwDVT0W7908bnBmLYg1beQ_Q9wgh7DRoCecIQAvD_BwE
  7. The plate I got was the wrong one but the locking screw works. I replaced that screw. I'm looking into getting a new coil. I couldn't identify any part numbers or markings on the old coil. 8. @Jerry Roberts Thank you. When I pull it out I'll check and let you know.
  9. @soth122003 Ohhh I forgot about that! Thank you for letting me know. I'll be prepared that it may not work. Gonna pull the distributor in a little bit. Is there a spot that I can locate the model number?
  10. I actually already ordered a NOS plate from ebay (link below, it was the cheapest one I could find with the same kind of adjustment screws and for a 49 plymouth) We also are ordering new points from Partsgeek.com. https://www.ebay.com/itm/141583704023?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=141583704023&targetid=1645685074288&device=m&mktype=pla&googleloc=1018127&poi=&campaignid=20394324632&mkgroupid=148892315742&rlsatarget=pla-1645685074288&abcId=9317261&merchantid=135966246&gclid=Cj0KCQjwmvSoBhDOARIsAK6aV7g02Jgx7fHlHZgrEKOoS3iqVB2DXeryBkRzCPA-SEUxnC0Gly-Lj6gaArdIEALw_wcB
  11. @Tom Skinner Thanks for the reply. Ok I was wondering about that. Would you recommend pulling the distributor to install the plate or would I be able to do it with it in the car? I'm new to this and wouldn't know where to start when pulling a distributor lol!
  12. I was trying to adjust the points on the distributor. I turned the adjusting screw and gapped them and then I went to turn the locking screw and it was loose. I tried to tighten it and it just kept spinning and never tightened. Is there anywhere I could get a replacement screw?
  13. @soth122003 Yeah that is my plan. Keeping them soaking while we rebuild the starter. Thanks.
  14. @keithb7 Thank you for the advice! I totally forgot about the throttle being open lol. And I did not know about the plugs being out. I will do that as well. Anything else i could do to the valves with them still in the engine to make them seat better or will I have to pull them out?
  15. 1949 Plymouth sitting for probably 30 years or so. Tested for compression across the cylinders. Got below 30 for all of them. All the valves are moving up and down. We wire wheeled the underside of the valves. Also replaced the head gasket. The readings are still the same after all this. Put some ATF in the cylinders and tried again. Reading for 1 was 15 dry and then with ATF it was 35 or so. The others went up too but none got to 50 or above. All still very low. Would this mean stuck rings because it was locked up and sitting so long? Any tips? We have it soaking in ATF overnight. It is also cranking very slow. The starter sounds pretty bad. Going to take it out and rebuild it but could the slow starter be affecting the low readings?
  16. @Los_Control Totally get what you're saying. I realize I have to move on too lol.
  17. @Los_Control I understand where you're coming from about just getting to the point and getting the engine running....and I totally get that. I guess for me this is my first project car ever and it is all new to me, and I'm young and to me that's part of the fun of it....diving into the history of the car and just trying to uncover different clues. I don't have a window that I have to get the engine running so I'm just taking it slow. You and everyone else has been very helpful!
  18. @Plymouthy Adams @Los_Control I'm confused as to why it is a 4 digit code and not 3. The tire looks really old. Guess I'll have to do some research.
  19. Trying to figure out the date code on this Uniroyal tire. Date code on the back of it says: DOT APHF DHX 1193 Does that mean that the date of this tire is 1993? It seems a lot older but that is what the date code says and it kinda lines up with possibly how long the car has been sitting. Here's a picture of the front of it and the date code even though it's hard to see.
  20. @Los_Control Just got news from the previous owner who only had it for 5 months before I got it. He had actually put those three newer Nexen tires on just to get it to my place because and left the old original Uniroyal whitewall tire on because that was the only one that took air from the previous owner. So it's probably been more like 30+ years.
  21. @Los_Control Yeah I will check that older tire on the back and see. Yes, now that we got the engine free and turning over with the starter it should be able to try and get it going soon. None of the valves were sticking either which I was really surprised about because some of the valve stems had rust on them.
  22. @Los_Control Actually only one of the three Nexen tires has a date code. The other two dont. It seems more than likely that the previous owner put them on to move it around because the fourth one is a random white wall tire that is way older than the rest. Yeah it had a carburetor and air cleaner on it. Another thing is that the belt was rusted to the pulleys when we were trying to take it off. That seems like a sign that it's been sitting at least 10 years you think? That's a good thought about the wheel cylinders. I'll have to check that soon and get back to you. Thank you for your help! I like sleuthing ?
  23. @Los_Control It was locked up tight though. One of us had to be under on the flywheel and one on the top hitting the piston with a block of wood. Would 4 years do that? I guess if water got in which it did, then it wouldn't really matter how long it sat right.
  24. @nonstop I haven't checked the wheels yet. That makes sense what you're saying though.
