chucky07 Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 on reassembling my transmission..i'm about to install clutch disc and pressure plate...and I notice the surfaces that the clutch disc pushes against are somewhat rusty...(*not actually flywheel ..because I have fluid drive, but not sure what these suraces are called,( the two surfaces on either side of the clutch disc itself) Should I sand the rust off? I'm thinking this will damage the smooth surface and the clutch will not function properly. Is there another way to remove the rust without distorting it? Thanks in advance. Quote
55 Fargo Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 Kevin, you might be able to take it and have it machined, down a bit, this can be done where they rebuild clutches and flywheels. If there is very little rust, say just surface rust, how about steel wool, or fine sandpaper. If this rust is heavy, maybe this part should be machined smooth, that would take care of any possible warpage or uneven surfacing. I may be wrong about this, so someone else may chime in to correct me. This part is called a Clutch driving plate, is attached to the fluid coupler, and the clutch pressure plate bolts to it, the clutch disc mates with the surface of the clutch driving plate. PS just looking at my Mopar service manual, the clutch drive plate requires a special puller to remove it from the fluid drive hub. Do you have the fluid drive off now? Maybe you could just clean up the surface by hand, just to get the rust off, this you may be able to do without taking off too much clutch plate material. Not sure if this helped or not.........Fred Quote
chucky07 Posted July 30, 2008 Author Report Posted July 30, 2008 the fluid drive is mounted up already...guess illt ry the steel wool...dont really wanna take it out... thx for info...much appreciated.... The rust is a light surface rust..as it was in the back of my truck for a few months... I'm wondering if i just installt he new clutch disc..if it will wear the rust off..or if it will cause problems? Quote
5.9diesel Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 id at least try to get the worst off. give it a gentle polishing, and dont rub too hard, and dont stay rubbing in one place. Quote
