55 Fargo Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Hi before I get the new sender unit for the tank, I decided to run brand new 14 gauge wires from the gauge to the sender area. I chose blue and orange colors, ran the wires in the along the factory route, put new terminals on each end, used almost 40 feet of wire for both. I then tested the gauge by grounding each wire at a time, the gauge appears to be working, will test with sender when I get one. I still need to re-wire the lights from the terminal block to the back, the wires I have now are all 16 and 18 gauge, too light for 6 volt, the horn relay and a few other items to be rewired as well, the rest I have done already. My gas gauge is powered up with the key on only, not sure if that is correct or not, have to look at the schematic to verify............Fred ps it was 45 in the shop and -10 outside Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Fred, The gas gage is only supposed to work with the key on, so you have that right. As for 16 & 18 gage wire being too small for 6 volt, thats not always true. If you are rewiring and want the proper gage wire for each circuit, take a look at the schematic for the 49 model in the back of the book. It would be the same size needed for any 6 volt car. Don't know why they didn't put the size in the book for 46-48, the Plymouth book is the same way. Have to look at the 49 model to get the size wire used originally. Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 19, 2008 Author Report Posted January 19, 2008 Thanx Norm, your right 16 g or maybe even 18 g probably would be okay for the tails lights, would not use it on head lamps, power to light switch, heater opr wiper motors, horns, etc. The wires running to the rear of the car are fairly new, but as I have said are 16 or 18 g, might leave them alone, the tail lights are all bright as it is............Fred Quote
oldmopar Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 When I rewired my 52 I use 16 for the rear lights and fuel gauge which is what as Norm pointed out is what the manual shows for p17 and newer for lights. One was a little dim but that was a ground problem that I fixed. Quote
