55 Fargo Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 Hi all, just wondering if anyone is familiar with the Ilco keyblank numbers for Chrysler keys. The 1940 to 1948 Mopar, is apparenlty a X1199B for the ignition and doors, the XO1199B is for the trunk, they are essentially the same key except for the head of the key one is round the other is hexagon. On my 47 Chrysler, I have a later model ignition switch, it has a Y138 or Ilco # S1767CH, this is a round key head, but don't think this is an ignition key, I always thought the igntion keys had a different shape and trunk keys are round heads. If anyone happens to know if these keys numbers are correct, can you verify this to me.....thanx Fred Quote
steveplym Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 I'm not sure of the numbers, but I purchased a key set on ebay earlier this year and they worked fine. Took them to the local hardware store and had them cut. I think they cost about $12-$14 on ebay. Good thing I had that done too as I only had one set of keys. Quote
steveplym Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 Here's a link to a set for sale on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1948-1955-Blank-Keys-Mopar-Dodge-Plymouth-Chrysler_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34205QQihZ002QQitemZ120197446911QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 15, 2007 Author Report Posted December 15, 2007 Thanx Steve, believe it or not, these keys for the 1940 to 1948 Chrysler products are still available at a couple of old locksmith places. So I am in luck that way. It's my current ignition switch key I am wondering about, as it is a little more modern, it is a 4 terminal, although I am only using 3 terminals and my in dash starter button. It is from a later year of Mopar, but the key is a round head Y138, need to know if this is the right key, and what other may work for this switch. Being round it is probably a trunk key that was cut for the igntion switch at one time Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 16, 2007 Author Report Posted December 16, 2007 Bought Y12 keyblanks today for the glovebox, they have them everywhere, common keyblank. It won't fit into the glove box lock though, does a key blank uncut slide into a lock, or does it needto be cut to the tumblers insdie to fit in..........Fred Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 I tink it needs to be cut first, but not positive. These key blanks don't seem to have a number on them. One set is aluminum & the other is brass. Octagon=ignition. Oval=trunk. My current ignition key is a mopar pentastar type. Not correct for the car, but it works just fine. Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 16, 2007 Author Report Posted December 16, 2007 Thanx Bob, not sure if needs to be cut first to slide intothe lock or not, hopefully someone on here can tell me. Like your self, I have another ignition switch and key. But what puzzles me is the key that is used in my ignition switch is a Y138, this key is listed as a trunk/glovebox key for 1957 and 1958 Chrysler products, now why the heck is it in my Ignition switch. I am going to key my trunk, doorlocks, and glovebox over the next few weeks, like to have these keyed. I can do the switch later, will have it keyed to my doorlocks key at that point, I like a 1 key system as well, but may go with the 3 for OEM sakes.............Fred Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 16, 2007 Author Report Posted December 16, 2007 One other question, the actual locking of the trunk and doors. Does the key just spin around in the lock cylinder and the handles are locked as in the trunk and door handles. Also can yoy lock the doors from the inside with the inside door handle, as mine does not do that, or is it only possible to lock the doors with the key in the door locks................Fred Quote
Niel Hoback Posted December 16, 2007 Report Posted December 16, 2007 You can lock your doors from the inside by lifting up on the door handle. Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 16, 2007 Author Report Posted December 16, 2007 Hi Neil, mine don't do that so something may be wrong with them............Fred Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 16, 2007 Author Report Posted December 16, 2007 Does anyone know if a locksmith can remove the lock cylinder from my trunk lock without a key. According to instructions, you need a key to be able to push in the cylinder pin to remove it, or is there some tool a locksmith would have to do this job.........thanx Fred Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 The locksmith who made me a key....just barely works....also messed up my trunk lock in the process. Around here, locksmiths aren't what they used to be. Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 17, 2007 Author Report Posted December 17, 2007 Hi Bob, there are a few real old time locksmith shops in Winnipeg, hopefully they can help. I don't want the locks messed up either. Surely these locks are not too complicated to be picked and re-keyed, by a professional. The alternative is to buy new cylinders from Bernbaums, the trunks are $85, the doors are $55, plus shipping and in my case duty. So having them done locally is more attractive in my books.............Fred Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 17, 2007 Author Report Posted December 17, 2007 Thanx Shel, where there is a will there is a way Quote
randroid Posted December 17, 2007 Report Posted December 17, 2007 Gents, I happened to run across an email from mikemaker that I got about two years ago concerning the keys for my '48 P-15, and the info he sent may help: ILCO # X1199B (ignition & doors) ILCO # XO1199B (trunk) Same keys but with different shaped heads. A locksmith can order the blanks with those numbers. -Randy Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 17, 2007 Author Report Posted December 17, 2007 Thanx Randy. Also does anyone know if the ignition switch can be repaired if the lock cylinder is missing the pin that holds it in place. I was wondering if a small screw would work in holding the lock cylinder into the igntion switch. Or I may need to find a another switch, or at least another lock cylinder to go into the switch body I have................Fred Quote
