Mertz Posted April 12 Report Posted April 12 I got most of the old weatherstripping off the windshield except for the top which is tight against the cab. I can’t open the windshield much further. It’s open about 3”. How do you remove the windshield or at least disconnect the top so I can remove the old and install the new? How can I free up the opening mechanism or bypass it so I can manually open the windshield? I have sprayed it multiple times with WD40. Quote
46BulldogDodge Posted April 12 Report Posted April 12 Windshield removal requires the stainless steel extender tape to be removed from the base of the windshield frame...most folks have to drill them out. Then there are 4 bolts accessible through the wiper motor covers...use some penetrant and scribe an outline to make replacement easier, more accurate. A previous owner may have used a sealant between the top windshield gasket and the cab metal to prevent leaks, causing the gasket to not separate. Here you can also use a penetrant...just one that doesn't mess with the paint 🙂 Dick Hultman SWPA '46 WC & '57 FFPW Quote
Mertz Posted April 12 Author Report Posted April 12 I don’t need to completely remove the windshield just move the top forward to get the old out and new in. The cranking mechanism is pretty much frozen. I would like to replace it but can’t get the screws out at the windshield. Is mechanism held in by the two screws on the dash? I removed the 4 bolts behind the wiper covers but it moved the windshield out at the top about 1”. It was enough to get the old weatherstripping out and I have started to get the new in. I’m stuck right now at the middle. Quote
46BulldogDodge Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 Yes, the two bolts screw into the main body of the regulator. But taking them out will release the tension keeping the windshield bottom tight to the cab. Might give you enough room to finish the removal and replacement of the windshield gasket. Trickiest part of the installation of the new gasket is at the corners where the groove the gasket fits in was squeezed tighter when the frame was originally bent. IIRC, dish soap for a lube and tape to hold it down/in while you work your way around the frame. It tends to pop out. I haven't done it myself but this is what I remember from other posts over the years. Dick Hultman SWPA '46 WC & '57 FFPW Quote
