1949 Special Deluxe...replaced motor and transmission mounts, won't shift

Most Chilton/MoToR type manuals will give an overview of the process; usually it simply involves loosening the lower shift sectors on the column and centering them in neutral using the appropriate sized drill bit or pin. There aren't any perishable bushings in the transmission lever system itself, but the holes for the arms might be ovalled somewhat depending on the accumulated wear/mileage. There might be wear in the upper column causing the hand lever to hang up.

Our old Mopars use a different procedure. This is from the service manual which anyone working on these car must have. The gearshift selector rod adjustment usually does the trick after replacing engine and trans mounts.

So we messed with it a bit yesterday to no avail.   Is this just one of those things that you have to keep messing with until you get it right? How tight do you tighten the nut before backing it off?  Till the spring is fully compressed?

What does the procedure call out?  ?

"Tighten nut until all play of rod is taken up."

Don't know what else to say about this.......when play is eliminated......stop tightening. I have found this procedure works well when followed properly.
