Well, how's the rebuilt engine look?

But, in the photo, it looks like the water pump would force water into the bypass hose, above the thermostat, then into the upper rad hose which dumps into the top of the radiator. Then it would go through the radiator, out the bottom rad hose, and back to the water pump without reaching the water jacket. I don't see how it could circulate water in the block.:confused:

Norm;

The water pump forces water from the lower radiator hose out the back of the pump and into the water distribution tube and from there to the engine water jacket. This water then hits the closed thermostat (assuming a cold engine). The by-pass allows a portion of this water to return to the suction side of the water pump and make another pass through the engine. This by-pass cycle continues until the water is warm enough to open the thermostat at which time the hot water goes to the top of the radiator.

Water for the heater leaves the back port on the head and circulates through the cabin heater core. This water then returns to the suction side of the water pump and does not go to the radiator.

What would be the consequence of using the internal bypass therm housing with an external bypass block?

Oh and yes, Darin's car sounds real good with the glass pack. Nice and quiet inside the car, with a nice mellow note from outside.

That is the part I question. In theory it might be possible to have blocked circulation until the thermostat upens. The water pump is not a positive pump so lack of circulation should not damage the pump. But I believe it would create hot spots and pressure in the water jacket. This could possibly be enough pressure to blow out a freeze plug. Also the thermostat may take longer to open possibly overheating parts of the engine.

If my theroy is all wet someone please tell me as I am open to discussion.

Don, what happens if you don't have the bypass at the theromstat housing, my motor is a 1953 plymouth and it doesen't have a bypass elbow hose and the waterpump doesen't have that extra portat the top. It works fine and I have heat about 5min. after running the car. I am not going to try and touch that other stuff, I just got the top of head back on from that other explanation:eek:

Rodney;

1953 engine should have an internal by-pass system. Or so I have been told. This issue needs more discussion.

Hey Darin...........Man, I wish I could hear your car cause I'm about ready to go the glass pack route.......So which glasspack did you use?

You know...I don't know because the mechanic that did valve job over a year ago had the glass pack put on it from the neighboring muffler shop. I can find out, though. I'm going to have to take a video of it and post it.

Thanks man.......yeah, I'd like to know what manufacturer it is, oh, and maybe the length and inlet/outlet diameters if possible.
