'49 Dodge Coronet (D30) 2 door Clube Coupe. The dome light had never worked and last week I had checked the bulb and it was fine. I had also checked the contacts for any voltage and I had none.

Sometime Friday night it came on. Of course I was in the house for the night and did'nt catch it. Needless to say Saturday morning the battery was dead. When I hooked up the battery charger I saw the dome light on. This puzzled me. I can't find a switch that operates it. None of the dash switches effect it. I have disabled the switch in the right door jamb. There is no switch in the pillar between the front and back side glass on the driver's side. It is only a 2 door, so there are no automatic swith's there.

Any ideas. I'm headed back out to start tracing this thing out from the dash.

Not sure if there is another switch hidden somewhere. In Plymouths, by 49 the door switch was a grounding type circuit, it completes the path to ground so the light will go on. so, if the wire is grounding anywhere from the light fixture to the door switch, it will turn the light on. Not sure if Dodge went to that the same year or not.

Guess you could remove the bulb, Jim.:D

It was nice talking with you and your better half at the Maple Leaf show Saturday.

At least there are two of us forum people here in S W MO.

How about under the dash, left side, there is a switch in this area for my Chrsylers map light. The pillar switch, is there any on the drivers side. The circuit is hot, so the juice is flowing from somewhere, I would try and trace it, rather than just undoing the bulb, good luck, let us know what it is..........Fred

One more thing, is there a way to switch on the light via the head light switch, like some later mdel cars, this would dim/brighten the dash lights. But turning it completely to the right would turn on the dome light......Fred
