BobT-47P15
Guess I'll mosey out to the garage and install the new voltage regulator I picked up yesterday. The new one I had had since the end of last year had two of the 3 screws so tight in the tabs I could not budge them. So I called the auto supply and asked them to order in another new one. Took back the first one and they traded. I asked the counter man if he had a screw driver handy.....which he did.....said we will check to make sure these screws will turn. They did. Also bought a new condensor that goes on top of the generator. They looked in the older models book and it appeared that the same Borg Warner item works for either 6 or 12 volt. So will put that on too. Will it change anything about the ammeter? Will find out shortly.
BobT-47P15
The answer is: nope, didn't seem to change a thing. The ammeter still has the needle clear over to the right. Will next look for a replacement gauge in the collection of goods when have some time. Did put a better quality speaker behind the radio grille. Radio does not work, but for tomorrow's car show will have the boom box in the back floor to operate that speaker. Actually---hooked up a second speaker to stick somewhere like under the seat, or maybe under the top boot. Next, have to decide which knick knacks to display in the trunk. Lots to select from. Decisions...... Oh yes, going to put an under-hood light on the firewall just for looks. It does work, apparently has a mercury switch. Am shining up the bracket with Mother's Mag Wheel Cleaner. Used this arrangement sometime in the past couple years......
Normspeed
Bob, I sure wish I was closer to your end of the country, so I could park next to that rig of yours and trade tall stories. I have an inductive? Amp guage that slips over your battery cable and tells what is actually flowing. You slip the 75-0-75 slot over the cable. I can priority mail to you and just send it back after you're done with it. See the pics. PM or email me if you want to use it.
Don Coatney
Also bought a new condensor that goes on top of the generator. Radio does not work, Bob; The only function of the condensor connected to the generator is to surpress radio noise created by the generator. If your radio does not work this condensor is not needed. BobT-47P15
That's what I was thinking it did. But the new one is new and more shiny. Norm, thanks for the offer. I will consider it if necessary.
splat1955
Hey Norm, I think I've got a gauge out in the garage something like this one....the picture of the rear of the gauge brought it to mind. I'm not sure how old it is, probably not vintage, but it's still in the box. If I remember right, it is a Mac or Snap On gauge.....I'll check it out. I had and still have no idea how it works so I've just left it in the box...don't even remember where I picked it up..probably a flea market or garage sale years ago. Normspeed
Yeah, they're handy, I've used mine on my boat's alternator wire, on battery and starter cables, no need to cut any insulation or unhook anything, just put the meter on the wire with the wire in the correct groove on the back and it starts reading. Quick and easy and doesn't care if it's 6 or 12 volt.
billwillard
Does your guage drop back to the middle when you turn the key off? If so your guage is not bad. Bill
