Gas sending unit malfunction

I have a 51 Dodge pickup that was converted from 6 to 12 volt. What's the best way to get a gas sending unit to work properly? A new 6 volt installed unit did not work. Would a resistor on the 6 volt system work, or would it be better just to get a 12 volt system installed? Appreciate any suggestions.

You'd need to put a votage reducer (resistor) in the power wire that's feeding the gauge. This will let your gauge work at 6V again.
