Tony_Urwin Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 My B1C has significant clutch noise, or chatter, in second gear. Only in second gear. It’s a rapid pulse, probably 5-7 times per second, and it can be felt through the shifter, but is mostly apparent to the ears as an audible rattle. If I let off on the accelerator, it will sometimes disappear and allow me to accelerate without the chatter. After I shift to third, the symptoms are gone. Any suggestions on how to fix? The previous owner (who passed away) left me a replacement clutch and pressure plate, so perhaps he was intending to replace the clutch. Any possibility that this is a transmission issue? Quote
grey beard Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 I'm curious about why you feel this noise originates with the clutch. Sounds to me like a second gear transmission problem. Does the noise you hear occur in any orther gear besides second? Do you hear it in first or third, or reverse? If it is apparant in second gear only. methinks you will need to dive into that gearbox to find a remedy - most lilkiely someone's heavy hand whilst shifting has broken a tooth that you now hear making this audible mpose you hear. Shoud this indeed be fact, the only remedy is to replace the bad pieces inside the trans. These gear boxes are not difficult to rebuild. Nevertheless, unless you have previous experience with them, I would recommend you find a technician who has been there before, rather than tackle this job alone. JMHO Don't know if your tranny is floor shift or on the tree. Nor do I know where you are located. My frined here in PA has a 3 speed column shift trans for sale, if you decide to go that route. Just let me know. Thanks Quote
Don Coatney Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 Tony; I agree with Dave. I suspect a transmission issue as opposed to a clutch issue as it is a second gear only problem. But when you have the transmission removed for repairs I would install the new clutch you already have. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 I agree with the others. If the chatter only happens in second it sounds like the transmission is the problem. If it was clutch chatter it would do it in reverse and low gear more than in second and third. Quote
Tony_Urwin Posted August 20, 2007 Author Report Posted August 20, 2007 Thanks, guys, for the input. It sounds like the easiest path for me would be to install another transmission. I could have the flywheel machined and install the new clutch, as Don suggested. and thanks, Greybeard, for the heads-up on a transmission, but mine is a floor shift. I'm in Cincinnati. How much does it cost to ship a Pilothouse transmission? Anyone got a good transmission for sale? Quote
