Thanks guys. The engine is a Hemi. It doesn’t have any external bypasses. I installed the thermostat with the spring down. I am interested in the thermostat you guys mentioned and Don showed a picture of. That will be the next one to go in. Just curious, what is the purpose of the raised base?

This issue started when the old water pump seized up. I put in a new replacement water pump (nothing fancy). While I had the original radiator out, I decided to put in the new aluminum radiator. The main reason for replacing it was only to preserve it and not ruin it. The 180 thermostat worked great with the olt water pump and original radiator. Now, it is just running too cool. I agree, and don’t think the thermostat was the problem, I replaced it to try and speed warm ups and get it to operating temperature.

I will hopefully have more time to mess with it tomorrow!

Just curious, does your engine have a cooling system drain on the block like the flatheads do? If it does, see if you can get any water to drain out of it. You may have a sediment problem in the block that is causing the water to skip several passages in the block and then rushing back into the radiator without removing heat from the engine. My friend had this same problem with his '37 Packard.

I got a chance to drive it a bit today. After I parked the car, checked the temps.  They were 195-200 before thermostat, 178 going into the radiator, about 125 coming out of the radiator, and 188 at the sending unit. So I guess my gauge is just reading a bit high! It still takes a while for the car to heat up though!

Of course, when I was checking the engine closer, I found my water outlet has a crack..... So for my next project!
