tattooman43 Posted May 26, 2017 Report Posted May 26, 2017 Is there anyway to get the play out of the steering gear box...mine has the original box...any suggestions 54 dodge truck 1/2 ton Quote
55 Fargo Posted May 26, 2017 Report Posted May 26, 2017 Yes do an adjustment as per "shop/service manual". But also make sure your tie rod ends, drag link, are all in good shape, without play. In fact the entire front end, king pins and tie rod ends, need to be slop free. The steering box if not too worn can be adjusted, and make sure it's full of lube, if it leaks use some very thin grease such as John Deere corn head grease, its got the viscosity of mustard.. Quote
59bisquik Posted May 27, 2017 Report Posted May 27, 2017 Ok... if all of those are completed and the box probably has a worn set of gears. Who can rebuild them? Quote

55 Fargo Posted May 27, 2017 Report Posted May 27, 2017 Gear lube, if the box doesn't leak? If you have a John Deere dealer nearby go and buy, "Corn Head Grease" http://www.greenpartstore.com/John-Deere-Special-Purpose-Corn-Head-Gun-Grease-AN102562.html or this product, http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/steering-box-lube Quote
MBF Posted May 29, 2017 Report Posted May 29, 2017 Also make sure that the mounting bolts are the box are tight, and that your shackle bushings are not worn out. It depends on where the wear in the box is. If it hasn't been run dry, and a previous owner hasn't cranked down on the adjusting screw to the point of causing binding, you may be able to adjust the bearing end play, and then the sector shaft play.
