Hi Folks,

I'm getting ready to start my engine rebuild for Lumpy - my '50 half ton. Turns out that the engine is a '59. Engine number is M23*2828I* (there are stars where asterisks are) and the block casting date is 5 22 59.

I put in a call to Gary up at Roberts and he's going to poke around and see what he can find.

Do any of you guys have this engine, and if so can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

- Jeff

Do you mean the T172? That the engine for the 1950 1/2 ton......or are you looking for details on the 59 engine you have?

Sorry I should reread my posts before I Submit. I have a shop manual for my '50 half ton, but the original engine as you know was a 218, while mine is a 230 (plus it's nine years 'younger'). Just want to have the right engine manuals for my '59 230, especially the parts manual. Thanks guys!

The 230.2 (132-138 HP) was used from 1942 to 1959.....so as far as engine specs go, you have a wide range of years. The 217.8 (218) was used from 1931 to 1954.

The differences are very few between the 218 and 230 as far rebuilding goes. So you should be able to read up on any of those years and be ok, depending on what kind of rebuild your doing.

Thanks 48D! It was running pretty smoothly when I took it out, so unless my brother/mentor (he's a mechanic) says otherwise I was hoping to just clean everything out and replace bearings & seals. That said a couple of the values look a little pitted plus he says we might as well replace the timing chain.

I'm going slow as molasses but really having a ball. Can't wait to get the engine done, painted and put back in the chassis!
