Thanks for the pics plyroadking. That explains it.

I will be placing an R7 OD in down the road and looks like I will need to shorten the drive shaft when it goes in. This looks like a good idea, so may as well do this as well.

Who or where did you get this done? It would be better to get with a shop that has done this and knows what I'm asking for.

The O/D on my 1939 was a straight swap.

Not sure you have to cut the drive shaft at all.

Not as familiar with the R7 but the O/D when installed should be the same length.

 

Might want to measure twice and cut once.

The original DS on the 39 with out overdrive would have used two pin and trunion Detroit u joints. When they had the overdrive installed from the factory one end had the pin and trunion and the other end had the modern or cross style joint and the drive shaft is shorter that the ones that are on the cars without OD. 

I think they used the cross style because of the angle at the ends to make sure they two ends were in parallel with each other.

If you are considering to  replace the u joints with original Detroit Pin and Trunion they will cost you aroundf 350-400 for the complete kits puls the labot to  get the new pin in and out of the ends.

 

The newer style with the slip joint will be about the ame but you will have a more modern DS with modern ujoints that can be purchased and luber on a regular basis without the trouble of taking the DS down and unpacking the OLD Style Pin and Trunion setup.

 

It is you decision to make but consider the total cost and also the eaze or maintenance with the new DS.

 

I do have several of the complete PIN and Trunion with housing if you need some

I can tell you I have a 1950 Dodge Meadowbrook, which has fluid drive and had a standard 3 speed. My R7 overdrive was a 99% bolt on deal. Only modification aside from routing the control cable was to get a longer speedometer cable and figure out a method to activate the kickdown solenoid.

Same driveshaft.

Thanks for the offer Desoto but I believe I will be going with the new modern style U-joints.

On the other note its the R6 that fits my 39 with very little mods. So if your OD fit your 39 then it might be an R6 and not an R7.

Here is a pic I posted a while back with both my R7 and the original trans from my 39 P8.
