55 Fargo Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 (edited) Today, I brought in my spare 251 engine "1960" built into the garage to keep it out of the elements. It spun freely 2 but has been stuck since. I pulled the side covers off, and am very amazed at the condition and cleanliness. This leads me to believe a few things, lower miles, well maintained, frequent oil changes, and engine run to operating temps during it's lifetime. The cylinders look okay, some mild rust on a couple, pistons stamped .030 over, so rebuilt at some point.. Hope to make this my "Hotrod" flattie engine someday, and hope this engine is a a good candidate as per it's cleanliness. Have a look at these pics. Edited November 5, 2014 by Fargos-Go-Far Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 5, 2014 Author Report Posted November 5, 2014 Here is a pic of the top of the engine. The exhaust and intake ports are filthy. 1 piston is still shiny, .040 is stamped on the top of it. Quote
Reg Evans Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 Yeah, the valves look pretty crusty. Maybe that's just carbon and will scrape right off. Quote

thrashingcows Posted November 6, 2014 Report Posted November 6, 2014 Compared with the oil, sludge and crud build up you can sometimes find in the lifter valley...that looks darn near perfect! Should turn out to be a nice easy rebuild for you. Quote
1941Rick Posted November 6, 2014 Report Posted November 6, 2014 Man that looks pretty bad. never seen such sludge build up. You may be in for a surprise when you open the bottom end.... I can save you the trouble and stop by and take it off your hands...... Really, nice find.....One .040 over? , it will make a good powerful engine. Quote
