I sincerely appreciate everyones input on replacing the Coil Springs on my 50SD project. It aint fun getting hurt. I already got punched in the jaw by the trunk mounting spring bracket, spittin blood for 2 days. I don't mean to seem like a complete idiot however those of us who never did something that could hurt us sometimes appear to be. I have the motor out, fenders off, COMPLETELY  stripped frame. I ordered a set of coils from Bierbaum, due in a few days. After answered posts and a little research I find it better to use a spring compressor along with a floor jack for this project.. NOW, my new question is   WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO DROP THE LOWER CONTROL ARM, DO I HAVE TO REMOVE THE SPINDLE, ETC, and AT WHAT POINT WILL THE SPRING FLY. JUST DONT KNOW, Thanks Stan

Stan I was worried about it my first time also.  So I put a rachet strap around the spring to hold it compressed and used the spring compressor.  I had no problems and it just tipped out when it was time.

Every install/removal is a bit different so I'll let those with recent success on a 49-54 tell their story, my last spring job was on a truck....

To help reduce the potential of a 'flying spring' you should attach a cable/chain to the frame, and loop around the outboard side of the spring.  If all else goes 'wrong' at least the spring can't go far.
