I needed an alignment on my truck and found a shop up the road that has been in business for 45 years. I'm pretty new to the area so didn't know much about this place. I ended up talking to the owner for several hours about old Mopars. He told me about his 1942 Plymouth he had when he was younger that he fully modified into a street race car and beat everybody around. He described how he swapped to a larger flathead then added a bigger crank, bigger cam, boring the engine, aluminum head, dual carbs, dual exhaust and modified clutch and flywheel. He told me how he was the fastest thing on the street and how the car would spin the tires in all 3 gears. He was a very cool guy and I promised I would bring my car back to his shop so he could check it out. It was really cool talking to a guy that was so knowledgeable about old Plymouths.

Sounds like you met a new friend who is a keeper. It is great to talk to such folks.

But I do wonder why is it (myself included) that when you talk to old street racers they always say they beat everything on the road. :D  What happened to all the losers? There must be a lot of them but they are never heard from???

I'm sure he wouldn't have embellished all those stories....he did convince.me to try to replace my oil gushing rope seal again. He said they used to buy 2 seals and install the top one by loosening the crank and using a sneaky Pete installer for the top half. They then packed the seal in with a dowel and cut the second seal up and packed it in until it wouldn't go in any farther. He said they never leaked that way. I'm still not sure I ever want to try it again but we shall see.
