Lloyd Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 I have a chance to pick up a bell housing off a 46-48 Plymouth P15 Special Deluxe but all I can look at is a picture of it. Since I will be modifying the original bell housing off my 39 P8 I thought it may be good to have another on the side. Does anyone know, will a bell housing off a 46-48 P15 fit a 39 P8? Quote
JerseyHarold Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 I have a bell housing from a '39 and the starter is located higher up on it because it's a foot-pedal style. The P-15 has a push-button starter so I'd suspect it's mounted lower on the bell housing. Quote
Lloyd Posted July 18, 2014 Author Report Posted July 18, 2014 Thanks Jersey. Do you know the starter is mounted lower on a P15 or suspect? Quote
JerseyHarold Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 I've got '51 and '52 Plymouths and the starter is definitely mounted lower on those. My 'educated suspicion' is that the P15 starter is mounted lower because they went to a starter relay/ pushbutton arrangement. Quote
Lloyd Posted July 18, 2014 Author Report Posted July 18, 2014 Yep. Then I would agree, there probably is that difference. Thank you. Quote
Robert Horne Posted July 19, 2014 Report Posted July 19, 2014 The starters from each may still work though. On my 38 Coupe, I have the 38 bell housing, that has had the 38 starter, 37 starter, a 54 starter, and finally a 56 starter(12 volt). They all fit ok.... Quote
Lloyd Posted July 19, 2014 Author Report Posted July 19, 2014 Hey Robert. So my starter will fit it. Well that's something. I went ahead and picked up the bell housing. After I get this car rolling down the road I am going to swap the manual for an R7 OD. May look at using this bell housing and moving the start from the pedal to a push button. Or even on the ignition switch itself.. Thanks to all for the input. Quote

I unknowingly tried about 7 years ago with my '40, there is no way it will work without major reconstrucion. Quote
Lloyd Posted July 19, 2014 Author Report Posted July 19, 2014 Ah hell. I already own it. I'll take a look at it when I get home. Was only a few bucks.. Maybe I can weld a coil spring under it and make a chair! (does anyone need a bell housing for a 48 Plymouth?) Quote
Robert Horne Posted July 19, 2014 Report Posted July 19, 2014 Here is a photo of my 38 brake/clutch assembly, with a 86 Dodge master cylinder. Is the 39 assembly different than the 38? Quote
Lloyd Posted July 20, 2014 Author Report Posted July 20, 2014 Don't really look like it. I'm not at home, I'm at work a few hundred miles away. Wont be home for a couple more weeks so I cant go look at it and it was a few months ago I took the engine out. I had some pics on my IPhone but playing around trying to "organize" them I managed to delete every one of them. But, I don't recall it looking like that. An 86 Dodge master cylinder? Did that take a lot to get it in? Quote
Robert Horne Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 The 86 MC was an easy install. I made an adapter from a piece of angle iron. Worked good for 10 years, then I installed a 94 Bronco MC, which has a bigger bore. One worked as good as the other. With the Bronco MC, it is easier to see the fluid level... Quote
Robert Horne Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 Looking at my Plymouth repair manual, the 39 to 41 brake/clutch assembly is a little different than my 37/38s, but is very close... Quote
