We bought this S15-1 a while back and dropped the pan and tappet cover...First thing I noticed is that 3 pistion rods were replaced as they were numbered out of order.  Then I could tell the pistons were also changed.  There was a little bit of slime in the pan as well.

Next I noticed the springs, tappets and block...spotless!

We were also able to hear the engine run befeore it was pulled.

Good score, looks like a low mileage rebuild. Have you taken the head off and checked for a ridge?

Probably a good thing to live by....although...when it comes to flatheads, doesn't really disturb much to pull the head. From the looks of everything else I'd agree that there's no reason to.
