I don't understand why I had to change to 12 volt coil and the drop voltage to 6 volt. I know I changed one before and burned up points until I put a resistor on it. Hope this makes sense.

 

All coils operate on 6 volts. Some coils advertised as 12 volts have an internal resistor and some have a notice that an external resistor is required such as is pictured below. 

 

You can continue to use the original coil when converting to 12 volts negative ground as long as you install the resistor and change the polarity on the coil.
