41/53dodges Posted August 22, 2013 Report Posted August 22, 2013 Does anybody else have an issue with the starter lever "falling"down and allowing the starter gear sit and bounce off the ring gear while the truck is running? Ive pulled the starter apart, and theres no evidence of any return spring except the one on the contact box, any ideas? Quote
Desotodav Posted August 22, 2013 Report Posted August 22, 2013 Should be a return spring on the starter motor contact box (as you mentioned) and one on the shaft of the push start pedal. Quote

Indeed there are! And both still intact. It almost seems as though the contact box does not push it out far enough, from the housing to the little cup that the lever hits is about 1", does this sound about right? Quote
HanksB3B Posted August 23, 2013 Report Posted August 23, 2013 Did you recently mount the cab to the frame ? Hank Quote
41/53dodges Posted August 23, 2013 Author Report Posted August 23, 2013 I did, but that doesnt really effect this starter. We added a return spring now so it cant slide around all over the place Quote
HanksB3B Posted August 23, 2013 Report Posted August 23, 2013 Is it the original starter because there are different configurations of the starter lever. Reason I asked about the cab to frame position is during my restoration, I used the interface of the floor starter to the starter lever as a target to the initial alignment point for cab to frame. 41/53dodges Posted August 23, 2013 Author Report Posted August 23, 2013 Interesting... I am pretty sure this is the correct starter, it matches the one in the parts manual. It just seems like the bendix was sliding forward and back, there was nothing to hold it one way or another. It looks like the contact box is supposed to do that, but my spring isn't long enough to do the job, so a short tension spring seems to do the job pretty well so far. lets see once we get it back up and running!
