Just joined.  I live in Alaska and have been bitten again by the "I have to have another project" bug.  I've redone a few cars/trucks in the past but haven't had a project for 10 years.  Past projects include

49 packard

48 chevy pickup

57 buick

41 plymouth coupe

56 dodge

54 olds

6 or 7 GTOs

39 chevy pickup (daughter's first vehicle)

63 GMC

I've found a couple of coupes that I'm interested in.  The problem is they are in the lower 48 and I'm up here.  Vehicles up here are almost all rust buckets.  One is in Bangor PA and one in Spokane.  Anyone know how I could get an independant inspection of them?  I know noone in either place.  I just can't bring myself to buy one sight unseen without an independant incspection.  Shipping one up here will add to the cost can't risk having it show up with lots of bondo or rust.  Thanks.  Casper

Yep,  somehow I mixed up the thread I was replying to.  Should have gone to MaineP15's post.

Sorry

Welcome, Casper.

And six or seven GTOs in your past? Awesome!

The GTO is probably the second car with which I ever really fell in love. ... The first was my dad's 1958 Mercedes 220s sedan.

On the inspection front, I just Googled and quickly found these two, the latter of which partners with eBay. When there's a link that says, "get an independent inspection of this vehicle," that's who they send if you book it.

AutoInspections.com

InspectMyRide.com

Obviously there's cost involved.

On that note, I'll go on record as volunteering my services for anything someone might want inspected in my region; pretty much Kansas City to Oklahoma City, Springfield, Mo., to Wichita. ... It'd be fun and there are people I could see or other things I could do along the way. Just have to fit it into my schedule.

That would be a great resource thread, in fact: Forum members who volunteer for inspection services, and the geographical areas they could cover.

Hey Welcome to the board....Looks like you've got your hands dirty once or twice...:)

I would look at the Spokane WA car...that is basically high desert out there.  My 68 Chrysler wagon came out of Yakima WA....not too far from Spokane.  Bought it sight unseen and I couldn't have been happier...100% rust free.  We did e-mail dozens of pics though.

Good luck on your search!

That's the one I've settled on. I'd rather have the 3 window but it would cost me more than the car to get it up here. How did you work out the payment on the car that you bought sight unseen? I hate to send that much money to someone I don't even know.

Yeah that's the trouble...you have to take a bit of a risk.  I was fortunate and the amount was only $1200...and the guy was "known" in and around the car/part selling scene.

What I did was send the money and told him I wanted the title and registration sent to me ASAP.  Once that was in hand then I arranged shipping for the car.  But since I was picking the car up and bringing it across the border myself I could do this.  If you were to have the transport company broker the car across the border..twice...then I would think they might need all the paper work in their possession.

I know there are guys on the board from around that area.  Try and put up a separate thread asking for someone in that area to do some leg work for you.  Tell them too that you will be willing to pay for their time and fuel.

Wells fargo, my bank will do for me in a branch office down there. I have to say Wells Fargo has taken care of me over the years. No charge either.
