glendale Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 before i start putting the sbc in i have some questions. I have noticed that most people just cut the top of the core support. I would rather not. do you guys do this only because you don't want to pull the front clip. or am i missing something? Quote
John Burke Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 I cut mine because it made it so much easier without pulling the whole front clip...I'll weld it back in later, grind it smooth, just like new...john B. Quote
glendale Posted November 4, 2006 Author Report Posted November 4, 2006 i was just wondering are you the guy doing the same kit? Quote
John Burke Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 probably...I am putting a sbc in a 49 Dodge and am using the PlyDo front and rear mounting kits. I have the motor in and since I lowered the rear end 2" I had to cut the top of the tranny tunnel out to make it fit....I needed to cut some out anyway to make room for the Lokar shifter i am useing....I also ordered the front end lowering kit from PlyDo...I'll post pics of how that works out when I install them....John Quote
Ian Morrison Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 John that looks like a 49 second series. There is a lot more room between the frame rails of the Coronet. Is there any issues with the steering box? I found a 283 with 2 speed glide tranny that I was thinking of using. And as per the original question the answer is yes the rad support was cut and re-welded when someone put a plymouth engine in. Ian Quote
glendale Posted November 4, 2006 Author Report Posted November 4, 2006 my car is lowered at least 4 inches in the back. do you think that is going to be a problem? i ordered the trans crossmember yesterday. and how much work did you have to do to the firewall? Quote
John Burke Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 I don't think the 4" will be a problem....If you cut out the top of your tranny tunnel before you install the engine...You should'nt have any fireweall issues...it is tight...you have to get the exhaust manifold over and behind the steering box and I did trim my inner fender panels just to make it easier Quote
glendale Posted November 4, 2006 Author Report Posted November 4, 2006 thanks john. i'm gonna pull my front clip and motor and tranny sunday morning. Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 Bob Cristwell (the guy who I bought my Soto engine from and was also my T-5 install coach) installed a 318 into a P-15. After he had the engine in place and was completing the final connections he observed that he could not pull the distributor from the engine. He had to jerk the engine back out and modify the firewall. Keep this in mind when you do your install. Quote
Guest mudflap22 Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 When I put the 318 in my p-15, I also used the Ply-Do engine mounts. I also used a Gm HEI dist converted to the 318 with a bushiing and I have had that dist . in and out several times. I DID not modify my firewall when I installed the engine. I may have to move the raidator mount forward slightly but not much. I don't think one would have to modify the firewall for a Chrsyler/Dodge engine transplant. Just my two cents. Bruce Quote
glendale Posted November 8, 2006 Author Report Posted November 8, 2006 i did not realise that i was going to have to cut out the tranny crossmember but that is cool. Quote
